DCI intensifies hunt for Kasipul MP Charles Were's killers, citing crucial leads
Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were was assassinated on Wednesday, April 30 on Ngong Road near City Mortuary roundabout and shot at least four times at close range by a lone gunman who escaped using a sportbike waiting nearby.

NAIROBI, KENYA — The post-mortem examination on the body of Charles Ong’ondo Were, the deceased Member of Parliament (MP) for Kasipul, is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, as law enforcement officials escalate their investigation into his fatal shooting.

Dr. Johansen Oduor, the Chief Government Pathologist, will conduct the autopsy, which the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) anticipates will yield “further insights into the cause of death and support the investigation.”

In a statement released on Friday, the DCI provided an update on the ongoing investigation, days after the legislator’s shocking murder, characterizing the act as “targeted and premeditated.”

“Immediately after the incident was reported, a team of detectives from the DCI Homicide Bureau, supported by forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, was deployed to the scene,” stated John Marete, DCI Communications Director, in the official statement. “The team meticulously examined the crime scene and collected critical evidence essential to the investigation’s progress.”

Investigators have meticulously reconstructed Were’s movements from Parliament to the location where the fatal shooting occurred.

The forensic analysis conducted by the investigative agency has yielded “significant leads,” enabling detectives to narrow their focus on potential suspects.

While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, investigators assert that the attack was not a random act.

“The DCI is pursuing all angles to uncover the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the statement further clarified.

“The DCI extends its heartfelt condolences to Hon. Were’s family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents, and friends during this difficult time.”

In a plea for public assistance, the DCI urged, “We appeal to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station or use our toll-free lines: 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203).”
