NAIROBI, Kenya — Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged police officers who previously served in the alleged Nairobi Sierra unit to come forward and disclose what they know about its operations, while claiming some could be at risk because of information they possess.
Speaking on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Gachagua alleged that the unit had been dismantled and its officers redeployed to different locations.
He claimed, however, that there were plans to target former members of the unit to prevent them from revealing information about its alleged activities.
Gachagua did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim during his address, and the allegations had not been independently verified by the time of publication.
Gachagua urged officers who served in the alleged unit to disclose what they know and seek protection if they fear for their safety.
“Sasa hao police nataka niwaambie leo: imeamuriwa ndio evidence iishe wasikuje kuongea ata siku moja, watatafutwa wote mmoja mmoja watauawa,” he said.
He further alleged that former members of Nairobi Sierra could be targeted because of information they hold about the unit’s operations.
“Hao Nairobi Sierra, whatever they are, mkono unasema watafutwe mmoja mmoja… wapigwe wote wa-erase evidence,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader called on officers with information about alleged wrongdoing to come forward, explain who instructed them and seek protection through the Witness Protection Agency (WPA).
“So what I’m advising those police officers: muingie haraka mtangaze, you confess what you did, useme nani alimwambia, then mukimbie kwa unit inaitwa Witness Protection,” he said.
Gachagua’s remarks represent his allegations about the former unit and the alleged threats facing its members. He did not publicly identify individuals whom he claimed were behind the alleged threats or provide evidence that former officers were being targeted.
There was also no immediate public confirmation from the National Police Service or other security agencies supporting his claims.
The allegations therefore remain unverified.
Gachagua nevertheless urged officers who may have information about the unit to report through appropriate investigative and protection mechanisms rather than remain silent.
He warned that officers who had been redeployed and stripped of their firearms could be particularly vulnerable.
“Mukiendelea kutembea na mumenyang’anywa silaha, mtaanza kuuawa mmoja mmoja,” he said.
The remarks come amid an increasingly prominent political debate over police accountability and alleged abuses by security agencies.
Gachagua has previously raised allegations concerning the existence and operations of specialised security units, using the Nairobi Sierra case to argue for greater scrutiny of police conduct.
His latest comments shift the focus to the officers who allegedly served in the unit, particularly whether they possess information that could assist investigations into alleged wrongdoing.

The call for officers to seek protection also raises broader questions about the mechanisms available to police officers who may wish to disclose information about alleged misconduct while fearing reprisals.
Under Kenya’s legal framework, the Witness Protection Agency is mandated to provide protection and support to witnesses whose safety may be at risk because of their cooperation with investigations or judicial proceedings.
For now, however, there is no independently established evidence that former members of the alleged Nairobi Sierra unit are being systematically targeted.
Gachagua’s allegations are likely to intensify calls for authorities to clarify whether the unit existed in the form he describes, the nature of its operations and what happened to officers who allegedly served in it.
The DCP leader maintained that officers with knowledge of wrongdoing should come forward, identify those who gave them instructions and provide information that could help establish the facts.
