Gen Muhoozi reveals son Ruhamya training at Britain’s elite Sandhurst military academy

KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has revealed that his son, Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, is currently undergoing military training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, extending the Museveni family’s military legacy into another generation.

In a post shared Thursday on X, Gen. Muhoozi praised his son’s performance at the elite British military academy, which is globally recognised for training senior military officers, royals and heads of state.

“My beloved son, Ruhamya, is doing an excellent job in Sandhurst. All good Ugandans should pray for him every day,” Gen. Muhoozi wrote.

The post was accompanied by photographs showing Ruhamya dressed in combat gear during a military field exercise alongside fellow officer cadets.

Hours later, Gen. Muhoozi shared another image comparing his own days at Sandhurst with those of his son nearly three decades later.

“Father and son going through the same hardships. Separated by 27 years. God bless Ruhamya,” he posted.

The images quickly attracted attention across social media, with supporters describing the moment as symbolic of continuity, discipline and military service within Uganda’s First Family.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading military training institutions. Located in Berkshire, England, the academy has produced generations of senior military commanders, royals and political leaders from across the globe.

Among its notable graduates are former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the late Sultan Qaboos of Oman, former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Botswana President Ian Khama and former Nigerian Head of State Yakubu Gowon.

The academy has also trained renowned military commanders, including Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery of World War II fame. Members of the British Royal Family, including Prince William and Prince Harry, have also passed through Sandhurst alongside several international royals and future monarchs.

Gen. Muhoozi himself joined the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in 1999 as an officer cadet before enrolling at Sandhurst, where he graduated in 2000 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

His military career later saw him command the elite Special Forces Command (SFC), serve as Commander of Land Forces and eventually rise to become Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces.

Ruhamya’s training comes months after Gen. Muhoozi publicly announced that his son had joined the UPDF, describing the development as a blessing to the “House of Museveni” after his own more than three decades in military service.

The development is likely to further fuel public discussion around the growing military and political influence of Uganda’s First Family, particularly as Gen. Muhoozi increasingly positions himself at the centre of national political discourse ahead of Uganda’s future leadership transition debates.
