NAIROBI, Kenya — A routine evening taxi ride through Nairobi ended at a police station rather than its intended destination after a passenger discovered a loaded pistol lying on the back seat, an incident that has renewed questions about firearm accountability in the Kenyan capital.

The weapon, a Glock pistol loaded with 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition and concealed inside a black holster, was handed over to police on Monday night after a passenger spotted it moments after entering the vehicle.

What began as an ordinary journey quickly turned into a police investigation.

According to officers, the passenger alerted the taxi driver immediately after noticing what appeared to be a firearm on the rear seat. Rather than continuing the trip, the driver headed directly to Pangani Police Station, where officers confirmed the object was a loaded handgun.

For investigators, the discovery opened a trail with more questions than answers.

Who owned the weapon?

How had it been left behind?

And perhaps most importantly, had it been involved in any criminal activity before ending up abandoned in a public service vehicle?

The firearm has since been secured in the station armoury while detectives work to trace its owner.

Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohamud said investigators were pursuing several leads.

“We will know more on the issue after we get the owner,” Mohamud said.

Police have already established that the taxi driver transported only two passengers before the weapon was discovered. Their identities have been recorded as detectives attempt to reconstruct the pistol’s journey through the city.

The incident highlights a recurring challenge facing law enforcement agencies worldwide: firearms that temporarily disappear from their lawful owners often create uncertainty that extends far beyond simple loss.

Security analysts note that when a loaded weapon is discovered in a public place, investigators must determine not only ownership but also whether the firearm may have been used in an offence before being abandoned or misplaced.

The concern is particularly significant in urban centres where firearms can change hands quickly and leave little trace.

For Nairobi residents, the discovery was unsettling for another reason.

The pistol was fully loaded.

Had the passenger not noticed it, the firearm could have remained unnoticed by multiple occupants of the vehicle, creating obvious safety risks.

The recovery comes only days after another firearm-related incident in which police retrieved a pistol belonging to a businessman from Garissa after it was reportedly stolen and later found hidden beneath a vehicle seat.

Taken together, the incidents have once again drawn attention to firearm storage practices and the responsibilities that accompany gun ownership.

Yet while detectives were still investigating the mystery of the abandoned Glock, officers elsewhere in Nairobi were responding to another incident that underscored the unpredictable dangers associated with firearms.

A bullet from nowhere

Several kilometres away in Njiru, Kayole Sub-County, a family preparing for evening prayers narrowly avoided tragedy when what police believe was a stray bullet crashed through the roof of their home.

The projectile struck shortly before 7pm.

According to the homeowner, a house help raised the alarm after hearing a loud impact from inside the residence. When family members investigated, they found what appeared to be a bullet head lying on the floor of a corridor.

Police later established that the suspected 9mm round had pierced the iron-sheet roof, punched through a gypsum ceiling and landed inside the house.

Only chance prevented injuries.

The family had been gathering for prayers moments earlier.

Crime Scene Investigation officers documented the scene and recovered the projectile for forensic examination.

Detectives are now attempting to determine where the shot originated and whether it was fired intentionally or recklessly.

No arrests had been announced by Tuesday.

A broader public safety challenge

Although the two incidents appear unrelated, they reflect a broader concern increasingly confronting authorities in rapidly growing urban centres.

Firearms do not always present danger only when used deliberately.

Sometimes the greatest risk emerges from negligence.

A bullet fired into the air that eventually returns to earth.

Both incidents demonstrate how easily ordinary members of the public can find themselves unexpectedly exposed to potentially deadly situations.

For police investigators, the coming days will focus on tracing the owner of the abandoned Glock and determining the source of the projectile that tore through the Kayole home.

For many Nairobi residents, however, the incidents serve as another reminder that the consequences of firearm misuse or mishandling often extend far beyond the person holding the trigger.

What began as a routine taxi ride and an ordinary evening at home ended with two separate investigations and a common question.

How did a loaded gun and a falling bullet find their way into the lives of innocent people?
