US-Iran peace hopes fade after Trump cancels key talks

WASHINGTON D.C., United States — United States President Donald Trump has said he is reviewing the outline of a potential deal with Iran, even as tensions remain high over the ongoing conflict and disruptions to global energy supplies linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking on Saturday before boarding a flight in West Palm Beach, Florida, Mr Trump said he had been briefed on the “concept” of a proposal from Tehran but was awaiting full details.

“They told me about the concept of the deal. They’re going to give me the exact wording now.”

He signalled scepticism over the proposal’s viability, suggesting it may fall short of U.S. expectations, and warned that military options remain under consideration.

“I don’t want to say that. I mean, I can’t tell that to a reporter. If they misbehave, if they do something bad, right now we’ll see. But it’s a possibility that could happen.”

According to a senior Iranian official, Tehran’s proposal prioritises reopening shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, while postponing negotiations on its nuclear programme to a later stage.

The plan, reportedly communicated through mediators, would involve lifting U.S. sanctions and blockades in exchange for restoring maritime traffic and de-escalating hostilities.

Iranian officials argue that sequencing the deal in this way could create a more favourable environment for addressing more complex issues, including uranium enrichment and nuclear oversight.

“Under this framework, negotiations over the more complicated nuclear issue have been moved to the final stage to create a more conducive atmosphere,” the official said.

The crisis has had far-reaching implications for global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz typically handles around 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments, and its disruption has pushed up fuel prices and heightened concerns over supply stability.

Analysts warn that prolonged instability could trigger wider economic consequences, including inflationary pressures and slowed global growth.

The United States and Israel halted a joint bombing campaign against Iran four weeks ago, yet no comprehensive agreement has been reached to formally end the conflict.

The war, which began amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme, has resulted in thousands of casualties and significant disruption to regional stability.

Washington has maintained that any lasting resolution must include guarantees that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons, an assertion Tehran continues to reject, insisting its programme is strictly for peaceful purposes.

Mr Trump also faces mounting domestic pressure, particularly over rising fuel prices linked to the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. With midterm elections approaching, economic concerns are emerging as a key political issue.

The president has repeatedly stated he prefers a diplomatic solution but has not ruled out further military action if negotiations fail.

He also suggested that he retains executive authority to extend military operations if necessary, arguing that the ceasefire had effectively ended hostilities under existing legal frameworks.

Despite diplomatic signals from both sides, significant gaps remain. Iran is seeking guarantees against future military action, the release of frozen assets, and recognition of its right to pursue peaceful nuclear development.

The United States, meanwhile, continues to insist on stricter conditions tied to nuclear non-proliferation.

With both sides holding firm on core demands, the outcome of the proposed deal remains uncertain, leaving global markets and geopolitical observers closely watching developments in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
