NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on journalists to uphold responsible and objective reporting as Kenya joined the rest of the world in marking World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement released on Saturday, Gachagua said this year’s theme; “Shaping a future at peace; promoting press freedom for human rights, development and security,” underscores the critical role of journalism in shaping informed and stable societies.

He said he joined the global community in recognising media professionals “who sacrifice their time and risk their lives” to tell stories, protect the environment, and in some cases, save lives.

Gachagua noted that press freedom in Kenya has made significant progress over the years, but warned that the gains must be safeguarded, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.

He urged journalists to remain vigilant and uphold professional standards, cautioning against complacency in an increasingly complex media landscape.

According to him, a free press must be anchored in responsibility and objectivity, especially during politically sensitive periods.

The former Deputy President emphasised that media freedom remains a cornerstone of democratic governance, enabling accountability, transparency, and public participation.

Kenya has historically maintained a relatively vibrant media environment compared to many countries in the region. However, concerns have persisted over threats to journalists, regulatory pressures, and the impact of misinformation in the digital age.

Global watchdogs, including Reporters Without Borders, have previously noted both progress and ongoing challenges in Kenya’s media landscape, particularly around election periods.

Gachagua’s remarks reflect a broader debate within the journalism profession, balancing press freedom with ethical responsibility in reporting.

He reiterated that while journalists play a vital role in informing the public, the credibility of the media depends on accuracy, fairness, and professionalism.

As Kenya moves closer to another election cycle, the role of the media is expected to come under increasing scrutiny, with stakeholders calling for adherence to ethical standards while safeguarding editorial independence.

World Press Freedom Day continues to serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting journalists and ensuring that media institutions operate freely, responsibly, and without undue interference.

Gachagua’s message adds to growing calls for a media environment that not only remains free but also contributes constructively to national cohesion and democratic stability.
