KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the release of Brigadier General Johnson Namanya after five days in military detention, following an internal probe that cleared him of wrongdoing.
Brig Gen Namanya had been arrested last week alongside Major General Don William Nabasa as part of a broader crackdown within the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), targeting alleged corruption and misconduct among top ranks.
According to reports, the officers were initially detained at a Special Forces Command (SFC) facility in Kasenyi, Entebbe, after being questioned by military authorities.
His release follows what officials described as an amicable meeting with Gen Muhoozi, after which he was formally cleared of all allegations and allowed to resume his duties.
The detention of Brig Gen Namanya formed part of a wider internal operation that has seen several senior UPDF officers investigated over alleged corruption, procurement irregularities, and abuse of office.
Since assuming office as CDF in 2024, Muhoozi has overseen a series of arrests, redeployments, and disciplinary measures aimed at tightening accountability within the military.
Analysts say the actions reflect an ongoing effort to professionalise the armed forces and restore public confidence in military institutions, although the opaque nature of such operations continues to raise questions about transparency.
Brig Gen Namanya had only recently returned to active military service after serving in a civilian role at Uganda’s Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, where he was Commissioner for Citizenship and Passport Management.
His recall to the military came amid a broader review of immigration operations ordered by the defence leadership, before his subsequent detention days later.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations and is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, has increasingly asserted control over military operations and discipline.

His leadership has been marked by swift and high-profile actions against senior officers, signalling a shift toward stricter internal oversight within the UPDF.
While Brig Gen Namanya’s release suggests the allegations against him were either unsubstantiated or resolved internally, the episode highlights the heightened scrutiny within Uganda’s military leadership.
The developments also underscore the central role of the UPDF in Uganda’s political and governance structure, where internal military decisions often carry broader national significance.
Observers say the key question now is whether the ongoing investigations will lead to formal prosecutions or remain within internal military disciplinary frameworks.
