Iran warns Kenya against acting on false Strait of Hormuz reports

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Nairobi has issued a stern advisory to the Kenyan government, urging authorities to ignore circulating reports of a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz and cautioning against collaboration with parties involved in the ongoing Gulf conflict.

In a press statement released on Friday 27, March 2026, the embassy dismissed the reports as “false news” and a product of what it described as “propaganda machinery” by the United States and Israel, aimed at sowing public anxiety and economic instability in countries including Kenya.

“The publication of false news and manipulated narratives concerning the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its impacts on life expenses in countries like Kenya are products of the US and the Israeli regime’s propaganda machinery and are aimed at distorting public opinion,” the embassy said.

The statement emphasized that, despite rising tensions in the Gulf region, maritime navigation through the Strait, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, remains uninterrupted.

Iranian officials also cautioned Nairobi against involvement with any foreign entities that might be seeking to escalate the conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, handles approximately 20% of the world’s oil exports.

Any disruptions there would have immediate global economic consequences, particularly for countries dependent on imported energy.

Analysts note that the advisory reflects Tehran’s broader effort to manage international perception and prevent regional allies, including Kenya, from taking sides in a highly volatile conflict.

Kenya, as a significant East African trade hub, has been monitoring developments closely, given the potential implications for fuel prices, shipping logistics, and economic stability.

Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued an official response to the Iranian embassy’s statement.

However, officials are reportedly assessing the situation and consulting international partners to ensure continuity in energy imports and shipping operations.
