NAIROBI, Kenya — The family of Boniface Kariuki, a hawker who sustained a critical gunshot wound to the head during recent anti-police brutality protests in Nairobi, has confirmed that he is now brain dead.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, family spokesperson Emily Wanjira shared the devastating news. She stated that medical professionals at Kenyatta National Hospital have confirmed that while Kariuki’s other organs remain functional, his brain activity has ceased.

“Mwangi is confirmed brain dead. We know what it means. We are just waiting for the doctor to tell us he is no more,” Wanjira said, using Kariuki’s alternative name.

The family further disclosed that additional bullet fragments remain lodged in his brain, which have not yet been extracted.

Two officers accused in Nairobi protest shooting
Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono, the two police officers accused of shooting a mask vendor during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi CBD, were arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on June 19, 2025.

Kariuki had previously undergone two surgeries at Kenyatta National Hospital to remove a bullet from his head and had been recuperating under round-the-clock supervision in the Intensive Care Unit.

During an earlier briefing, Kariuki’s father, Jonah Kariuki, revealed the immense financial burden on the family, stating that the hospital bill had already reached Ksh 1 million and continued to escalate daily.

The distraught family has also issued a plea for justice, urging the judicial system to ensure the conviction and sentencing of the police officers responsible for the shooting.
