Kalonzo-Gachagua meeting fuels Sifuna succession debate ahead of 2027
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka meets former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on October 26, 2026.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has drawn renewed attention to the contest over who should lead the opposition’s presidential campaign against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Kalonzo met Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Monday, October 26, amid growing speculation over whether the opposition will rally behind one candidate or continue exploring competing presidential ambitions.

The meeting followed claims by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala that his party had settled on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its preferred presidential candidate and intended to persuade Kalonzo to support him.

Wiper, however, rejected the suggestion that the planned engagement with Kalonzo was intended to convince him to abandon his own presidential ambitions in favour of Sifuna.

The outcome of Monday’s talks had not been publicly detailed at the time of reporting.

Wiper rejects claims Kalonzo will be asked to back Sifuna

Malala announced on Sunday that DCP wanted Kalonzo to support Sifuna, arguing that the Nairobi senator was capable of representing the opposition in the contest against Ruto.

“You have seen DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua meet Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna the other day. They are united,” Malala said.

“We have said we also want to talk to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. We want him to support Sifuna.”

He added: “On Monday, we are going to meet Kalonzo. In DCP, we have agreed Sifuna is up to the task.”

Wiper spokesperson and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru dismissed the remarks, accusing Malala of making statements that could deepen divisions among opposition leaders at a time when they should be pursuing unity.

“I urge the media to treat this statement with the contempt it deserves. The remarks attributed to Senator Malala can only be characterised as the work of a playwright rather than a serious political actor. Malala appears intent on driving a divisive knife through the heart of the opposition,” Njiru said.

The dispute exposed competing positions within the opposition over the presidential ticket, even as leaders continue to discuss cooperation ahead of the next election.

Gachagua-Sifuna meeting adds to opposition calculations

The latest exchanges followed a meeting on October 20 between Gachagua and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is linked to Sifuna.

The delegation that visited Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence included DCP and Linda Mwananchi figures. The discussions explored possible political cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections, prompting questions about how the emerging relationship could affect negotiations over the opposition’s presidential candidate.

Sifuna has since featured more prominently in conversations about the opposition’s possible ticket, while Kalonzo has continued positioning himself as a contender for the coalition’s top position.

Other politicians mentioned in discussions over a possible opposition ticket include former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi.

No joint opposition presidential candidate had been formally settled upon in the developments reported around the meeting.

Manyora reads possible signal to Kalonzo

Political analyst Herman Manyora has argued that the meeting between Gachagua and Sifuna could have implications for Kalonzo’s ambitions to become the opposition’s presidential flag bearer.

Speaking during his political analysis on YouTube on Saturday, October 24, Manyora suggested that closer cooperation between Gachagua’s camp and Sifuna’s allies could influence how opposition leaders negotiate their positions.

“They could be sending a signal to Kalonzo that ‘Look here, man; here is where power lies. Come this side, and whichever position we give you, you play,’” Manyora said.

He described Gachagua as an influential figure in opposition politics but cautioned against assuming that the former deputy president had already decided whether to seek the presidency himself or play a role in choosing the coalition’s candidate.

“I think he’s the most influential player in the whole opposition. But that is not about him being the most powerful,” Manyora said.

Manyora’s remarks reflect one interpretation of the developing political alignments; they do not establish that Gachagua’s meeting with Sifuna was intended to pressure Kalonzo into withdrawing his presidential bid.

Kalonzo insists opposition unity comes first

Kalonzo has defended his engagement with fellow opposition leaders, arguing that meetings between political allies should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of division or a settled succession plan.

“What worries the predator regime is not a visit between friends and cousins. It is a united alternative government in waiting,” he said.

He also maintained that bringing opposition leaders together remained a personal priority, despite their differing political ambitions.

“I have made it my personal mission to unite the opposition, and I will keep engaging all my colleagues. Liberating Kenya is bigger than any one person’s ambition,” Kalonzo said.

The central question now is whether the opposition’s ongoing consultations will produce an agreed presidential candidate or expose further disagreements over leadership and the distribution of political roles.

Monday’s meeting brought Kalonzo and Gachagua together amid those competing pressures, but the details of their discussions will be important in determining whether the engagement advances a common opposition strategy or leaves the presidential succession debate unresolved.
