NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya is in mourning following the untimely death of popular comedian and satirist Zachariah Kariuki, widely known by his stage name KK Mwenyewe. The artist, celebrated for his viral impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, passed away after a short illness.

KK Mwenyewe was pronounced dead on Monday 14, July 2025 night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital.

The news of his passing was confirmed by fellow comedian and frequent collaborator, Kafengo, who shared a poignant message: “Rest in peace brother, you will forever be in our hearts. To the family and friends, may God give us strength during these hard times.”

KK Mwenyewe rose to national prominence on social media in late 2022. His witty and humorous political satire, often featuring remarkably precise mimicry of Gachagua’s distinctive speaking style and mannerisms, quickly captivated a wide audience.

While details regarding his illness and final moments are still emerging, tributes continue to pour in from across the country, honoring his unique wit and comedic talent.

The youthful comedian’s ascent to fame, which began shortly after the Kenya Kwanza administration took power, had led to public speculation and hope that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua might acknowledge and support his talent, similar to the recognition given to Ivy Chelimo, who coined the popular nickname ‘Riggy G’. However, in a past interview with Jeff Kuria, Kariuki revealed that such support had not materialized.

In recent times, KK Mwenyewe had expanded his comedic repertoire beyond Gachagua-focused content, creating broader and more diverse short skits and actively collaborating with various other creators, including his frequent female collaborator, Cashina Ke.

His last video, an employment skit, was posted on July 4. At the time of his passing, he had amassed a significant online following, including over 1 million followers and 19 million ‘LIKES’ on TikTok.

In a 2022 interview, the Kisii University alumnus shared that friends had initially encouraged him to try mimicking DP Gachagua. Despite his initial doubts, consistent encouragement led him to join an online challenge, where he quickly became an internet sensation, with many of his videos going viral.

“It came super easy for me. My friends advised me to take up the Gachagua challenge and I pulled it off. I then decided to keep it up since everyone seems to be enjoying them so much,” he told this publication.

Busia Senator and presidential hopeful Okiya Omtatah was among the thousands of fans who expressed deep sorrow over KK’s death. He described the late comedian as a courageous and talented artist whose work resonated profoundly with a generation.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation,” Omtatah said in a statement.

“Through satire and art, Mr. KK courageously held a mirror to society, using humor not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.” Omtatah further praised KK’s sharp political wit and authenticity, hailing him as “not just a comedian, but a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot.”

He concluded by stating, “Kenya has lost a powerful voice,” and offered condolences to KK’s family, friends, and the wider creative community. “May his soul rest in peace, and may his light continue to inspire courage and creativity in those he leaves behind.”

X personality Sholla Ard also conveyed sympathy and shock, writing, “I’m honestly shaken. Like many people are having “short illnesses” & “sudden deaths”. Something’s not adding up. What’s really behind these sudden deaths & short illnesses? Is it stress? Silent diseases? Something deeper? Let’s talk, maybe we can prevent. RIP KK Mwenyewe.”

Fellow creative Willie Oeba shared his sentiments, writing, “The Leaders Of Tomorrow Are Dying Today. Rest In Peace KK Mwenyewe. A Great Talent & A Comrade.”

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro also offered his condolences: “This is tragic and sudden. Zachariah Kariuki (Mr KK Mwenyewe) was a very talented and creative comedian. We send our most heartfelt condolences to his family following his passing on. It is still unbelievable. Poleni sana. May KK Rest In Peace.”
