KAMPALA, Uganda — President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the death of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, describing the 34-year-old monarch’s death as a profound loss to Tooro and Uganda while revealing that the King had been battling an aggressive form of cancer.
In a condolence message issued on Saturday 29, August 2026, Museveni said he was conveying his condolences, together with First Lady Janet Museveni and the people of Uganda, to the Tooro Royal Family and the people of the kingdom following the death of the Omukama.
King Oyo died at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, after a period of critical illness, according to an announcement by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.
“It is with a lot of sadness that, on behalf of all Ugandans, Maama Janet and myself, I extend our most heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family of Tooro and to all Ugandans on account of the death of the prominent Muzzukulu, His Highness Oyo, the King of Tooro at such a young age of 34,” Museveni said.
“How unfair life can be!! He was orphaned while still young and he has died young.”
Museveni reveals King Oyo’s cancer battle
Museveni disclosed that King Oyo had been suffering from an aggressive form of cancer and said the Government had assisted the Royal Family in seeking specialised medical treatment outside Uganda.
The President said Queen Mother Best Kemigisa had informed him months earlier about the King’s condition.
“Some months back, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa, Nyinomukama, came to tell me that the Muzzukulu Oyo had cancer that was very aggressive,” Museveni said.
According to the President, arrangements were subsequently made to facilitate the King’s treatment first in Germany and later in the United States, where he died.
The disclosure provides the clearest official account yet of the illness that preceded the King’s death.
It also sheds new light on the Kingdom’s earlier decision to limit information about the monarch’s health.
On August 3, Tooro Kingdom had dismissed reports that Oyo was critically ill and receiving treatment in the United States, describing the reports as false and misleading.
The Kingdom said at the time that the King was in good health and had travelled abroad for official engagements and further studies.
The situation changed in the final hours of his life. On Thursday, the Kingdom confirmed that the monarch was critically ill and appealed to the public to remain calm, united and prayerful.
Hours later, the Kingdom announced his death.
Museveni’s disclosure now confirms that the King had been dealing with a serious illness for some time, although details about his medical condition remained largely private.
Young heir assures continuity of Tooro monarchy
The President also revealed that King Oyo left behind a young son who is expected to become the heir to the Tooro throne.
Museveni said Queen Mother Kemigisa disclosed the information to him during a telephone conversation.
“Fortunately, in a telephone call, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa told me that H.H. Oyo left a young boy heir that will be introduced to the public at the right time,” he said.
The identity of the child has not yet been formally announced by the Tooro Kingdom.
The revelation is significant because it provides an early indication of the succession arrangements following the death of a monarch who had himself inherited the throne as a three-year-old.
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Rwomiire had earlier assured subjects that the continuity of the Crown was guaranteed, saying Oyo had left behind a Prince whose identity would be formally revealed in accordance with the traditions and customs of the kingdom.
The eventual introduction of the heir is therefore expected to be closely watched as the Royal Family and kingdom authorities begin the process of navigating the transition.
Oyo’s 31-year reign
King Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, to Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.
He became Omukama of Tooro on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father the previous month.
At just three years old, Oyo became one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs.
Because of his age, the affairs of the monarchy were initially handled with the assistance of regents and senior members of the Babiito royal clan.
As he grew older, Oyo assumed a more active role in the cultural and development affairs of the kingdom.
His reign spanned more than three decades and coincided with efforts to strengthen Tooro’s cultural institutions while promoting development across the kingdom.
He championed initiatives linked to education, healthcare, environmental conservation, tourism and youth empowerment.
Museveni said the late monarch had demonstrated considerable potential in working with both central and local governments.
“In the short life on earth, he had shown that he had potential of working well with the Central and Local Governments to develop Tooro. What a loss to Tooro and Uganda,” he said.
Museveni praises Oyo’s relationship with government
The President also used his condolence message to praise Oyo for maintaining a working relationship with the central government.
Museveni said the King had avoided what he described as the use of cultural institutions to promote sectarianism.
“H.H. Oyo worked well with the Central Government, thereby avoiding the mistake of trying to use the Cultural Institutions that were restored by the NRM to promote sectarianism,” he said.
“It would be good if all the Cultural leaders understood the importance of this.”
Museveni’s remarks highlight the politically sensitive position occupied by Uganda’s traditional kingdoms.
The institutions were abolished by the government of President Milton Obote in 1967 before being restored in 1993 under Museveni.
Their restoration returned cultural authority to traditional institutions, although the Constitution does not give traditional leaders executive or political power.
Tooro is one of Uganda’s recognised traditional kingdoms and is centred in Fort Portal and the wider Rwenzori region.
King Oyo to receive official burial
Museveni has directed that King Oyo be accorded an official burial in recognition of his contribution to Tooro and Uganda.
He also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast for three days.
According to the President, the three days will comprise the day before the burial, the burial day and the day after.
“The three days are: the day of the burial, the day before and the day after,” Museveni said.
The directives place the death of the young monarch within a period of national mourning and underline the significance of the Tooro institution within Uganda’s cultural landscape.
Funeral arrangements, including the repatriation of the King’s remains from the United States and the date and location of his burial, are expected to be communicated formally by the Royal Family and Tooro Kingdom authorities.

Oyo’s death has triggered widespread mourning across Tooro and Uganda, with political, cultural and religious leaders joining members of the public in paying tribute to the monarch.
His death also brings the kingdom to a significant transition point.
For almost 31 years, Oyo was the face of the Tooro monarchy, having inherited the institution before he was old enough to understand the responsibilities attached to the Crown.
His death at 34 therefore closes an extraordinary chapter in the kingdom’s modern history.
The immediate priority for Tooro is now to mourn its King and conduct the funeral in accordance with royal tradition.
But beyond the mourning period lies another historic moment: the introduction of Oyo’s young heir and the beginning of another chapter for a monarchy that has already endured political upheaval, abolition, restoration and a remarkable succession story.
Museveni ended his message by praying for the late King’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
For Tooro, however, the Crown will continue.
The kingdom has confirmed that Oyo’s young heir will eventually be introduced, ensuring that the institution he inherited as a child will pass into another generation.
