KAJIADO, Kenya — A family in Kware, Kajiado North Sub-county, was left in shock after discovering that a person they had hosted overnight was allegedly a man posing as a school-going girl.

According to accounts from the family, the suspect approached a local retailer on the night of May 18, 2026, seeking assistance while dressed in a female school uniform.

He reportedly claimed to have been sent home from school due to unpaid fees and said he was searching for his stepmother, identified only as “Mama Glory.”

The suspect further alleged that he had been living with an aunt following the death of his parents, while his siblings were staying with their grandmother in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.

“He came to my shop asking if I knew Mama Glory. He said he had travelled by bus from school to Nairobi, where he met a good Samaritan who paid for his fare to Kware,” the woman said.

Moved by his story, the retailer offered him food and allowed him to spend the night at her home alongside her daughter and granddaughter.

The suspect was initially expected to sleep on a couch but later joined the daughter and granddaughter in a bedroom, reportedly claiming he was afraid.

“I woke up to pray and noticed he was not in the sitting room. My daughter told me he had joined them in bed because he was scared. I did not suspect anything at the time because I believed he was a girl,” the woman said.

However, the daughter later became suspicious after the suspect allegedly attempted inappropriate contact during the night.

The following day, she questioned him further about his background, noting inconsistencies in his responses. Her suspicions deepened, prompting her to confront him.

According to the family, the suspect was eventually forced to reveal his identity, at which point it became apparent that he was male.

The incident was reported to the Kware area chief, where the suspect allegedly admitted to having moved through several counties, including Narok and Kericho, relying on assistance from strangers for survival.

Authorities said the suspect was later taken to Rongai Police Station, where he remains in custody.

Kajiado North Sub-county Police Commander Kiprono Benjamin confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is currently undergoing an age assessment to determine whether he is a minor or an adult.

“We attempted to present him in court, but due to uncertainty regarding his age, an age assessment is being conducted. Appropriate legal action will follow once this is established,” Kiprono said.

Police indicated that the suspect is believed to be approximately 19 years old and could face charges related to indecent conduct involving a minor.

Investigators are also looking into the possibility that the suspect may be linked to a similar incident reported in September last year in Kinoo, Kiambu County, where an individual allegedly posed as a woman in an attempt to secure employment as a domestic worker.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, with community members urging increased vigilance when assisting strangers.
