KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among is facing mounting political and legal pressure after security agencies reportedly impounded luxury vehicles, cash and firearms during expanding investigations into alleged illicit enrichment and possible corruption-linked offences.

The widening probe, now stretching across multiple high-end properties linked to Among, marks one of the most dramatic anti-corruption operations targeting a senior Ugandan political figure in recent years.

Security sources, alongside reports by our sister publication the Kampala Dispatch, indicate that investigators recovered high-value assets from residences linked to the outgoing Speaker, including a 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan reportedly valued at about Shs3.4 billion, luxury Range Rover vehicles, significant sums of cash, and several firearms allegedly traced to Israel as the country of manufacture.

On Monday morning, heavily guarded police tow trucks were seen transporting some of the seized vehicles from Among’s residence in Kigo, an upscale lakeside suburb outside Kampala, to the Police Forensics Headquarters in Naguru.

Images circulating widely across Ugandan media and social platforms showed armed security operatives overseeing the operation as curious residents watched from a distance.

The seizures followed days of coordinated searches involving detectives, intelligence operatives and military-linked security personnel at properties connected to Among in Kigo and Nakasero.

Sources familiar with the investigation say authorities are examining possible links between the assets and allegations of illicit wealth accumulation, money laundering and violations of Uganda’s Leadership Code Act.

But beyond the luxury vehicles and cash, it was the reported recovery of firearms that appears to have triggered deeper alarm within sections of Uganda’s security establishment.

A source identified as Kintu was quoted in local reporting describing the scale of wealth accumulation as unprecedented for a parliamentary leader.

“This is the first speaker who has amassed so much wealth in the shortest time,” the source said.

The source further alleged that several firearms recovered from the residences were traced to Israel as the country of manufacture.

“Some of the weapons are registered, whereas others are not,” the source added.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the exact number or classification of the recovered weapons, and no formal criminal charges had been announced by Tuesday evening.

Neither police nor Among’s legal team has issued a comprehensive public response regarding the alleged firearms recovery.

The dramatic security operations come just days after Among withdrew from the race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament following growing pressure within the ruling establishment.

Her withdrawal followed escalating criticism from the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), led by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, which publicly withdrew support for her and endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership.

The political fallout intensified after controversy erupted over reports that Among had acquired an expensive Rolls-Royce vehicle amid worsening economic pressures facing ordinary Ugandans.

Muhoozi later appeared to reference the controversy directly in widely shared social media posts criticising extravagance among political elites.

The investigations also gained momentum after Inspector General of Government Aisha Batala Nalule confirmed receiving complaints alleging possible failure by Among to fully declare assets under Uganda’s leadership code requirements.

Sources familiar with the investigation say forensic analysts are now reviewing electronic devices, financial records and communications recovered during the raids.

Among’s mobile phone was also reportedly seized for forensic examination as investigators seek to trace financial transactions, asset ownership structures and communications linked to the probe.

Within Uganda’s political establishment, the images of luxury cars being towed from one of the country’s most fortified political residences have rapidly become symbolic of a deeper struggle over power, accountability and elite wealth.

Critics argue the developments expose long-standing public frustration over corruption and displays of political privilege at a time of rising economic hardship.

Supporters of Among, however, have privately questioned whether the investigations are being driven solely by accountability concerns or whether they also reflect shifting political alliances within the ruling system ahead of the new Parliament.

Political analysts say the affair has evolved beyond an individual corruption probe into a broader test of institutional credibility inside Uganda’s state structures.

As investigations continue, attention is now turning to whether prosecutors will pursue formal charges and how deeply the probe could extend into Uganda’s political and business networks.

For now, the downfall of one of Uganda’s most powerful political figures has become one of the defining political stories shaping the transition into the country’s 12th Parliament.
