KAMPALA, Uganda — Security agencies in Uganda have impounded two vehicles linked to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, as investigations into alleged illicit enrichment and asset declarations intensify.
The vehicles, a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover, were removed on Monday from a residence in Kigo, an upscale lakeside suburb near Lake Victoria, and transported under police escort to the Police Forensics Headquarters in Naguru.
Witnesses said the operation involved police officers, detectives and intelligence personnel, who secured the area before the vehicles were towed away.
The vehicles were loaded onto police trucks and escorted under tight security, as residents and motorists observed from a distance.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the basis for the seizure, but officials familiar with the matter said the action forms part of an ongoing investigation into financial conduct and asset ownership.
The development follows recent searches at properties associated with Among, including a residence in Nakasero where investigators reportedly collected documents and electronic devices for forensic examination.
Her mobile phone was also taken as part of the inquiry, according to sources, as investigators seek to analyse financial records and communications.
The investigation gained momentum after Aisha Batala Nalule confirmed receiving a complaint alleging possible non-disclosure of assets under Uganda’s Leadership Code framework.
The vehicle seizure comes hours after Among announced her withdrawal from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” she said in a statement.
She also pledged cooperation with investigators.
“In the meantime, I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised,” she said.
Among’s position has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks following shifts within the ruling establishment.
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), associated with Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, withdrew its support for her and backed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for the Speakership.
The developments have significantly altered the political dynamics ahead of the formation of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
Among rose to the Speakership in 2022 following the death of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, having previously served as Deputy Speaker.

She became one of the most influential figures in Uganda’s legislature, although her tenure has faced increasing scrutiny from opposition figures and governance watchdogs.
By Monday evening, neither police nor Among’s legal representatives had issued a detailed public explanation regarding the seizure of the vehicles.
The incident has nonetheless drawn significant attention within political and public circles, as investigations into senior officials continue.
As inquiries progress, focus is expected to remain on asset declarations, financial records and the legal framework governing public officials.
The case is likely to have wider implications for accountability and governance within Uganda’s political system as authorities continue their investigations.
