NAIROBI, Kenya — At least two people have died following a fatal road crash involving a Range Rover and a motorcycle along Riverside Drive in Westlands, Nairobi.

The accident occurred on Monday morning, August 17, 2026, with preliminary reports indicating that the motorcycle rider and the driver of the Range Rover died at the scene.

According to eyewitnesses, the Range Rover, which was reportedly carrying several foreign nationals, lost control before colliding with the motorcycle.

The vehicle reportedly rolled several times before coming to a stop, sustaining extensive damage that left much of it barely recognisable.

Witnesses alleged that the Range Rover had been speeding and overtaking dangerously shortly before the crash. The allegations had not been independently verified by Vivid Voice News by the time of publication.

Other occupants of the vehicle were reportedly rushed to hospital for treatment.

The exact circumstances that led to the collision remain unclear, with police expected to investigate the crash and establish what happened before the impact.

Crash causes traffic disruption

The accident caused significant traffic disruption along Riverside Drive, a key route connecting Westlands with parts of Lavington and Kileleshwa.

The road also provides connections to Chiromo Road and Waiyaki Way, as well as James Gichuru and Muringa roads, making it an important alternative route for motorists seeking to avoid congestion on Waiyaki Way.

Riverside Drive also hosts several diplomatic missions, international organisations and other institutions, including the German Embassy.

Motorists were advised to exercise caution and, where possible, use alternative routes as emergency and recovery operations continued.

Road deaths remain a concern

The Riverside Drive crash adds to a growing number of fatal road accidents reported across Kenya in recent months.

In the first two weeks of August alone, at least 31 people died and 75 others sustained serious injuries in 23 road crashes, according to figures released by the Kenya Red Cross Society.

The figures have renewed concerns over road safety and the behaviour of motorists, particularly speeding, dangerous overtaking and other forms of reckless driving.

Authorities continue to urge motorists, motorcycle riders and other road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution, particularly on busy urban roads.

Police investigations into the Riverside Drive crash are expected to establish the identities of those involved, the circumstances leading to the collision and whether any traffic offences contributed to the deaths.

This is a developing story and details may change as police and emergency responders release further information.
