Balimwezo takes early lead in Kampala mayor race

KAMPALA, Uganda — National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo has taken an early lead in the Kampala Lord Mayor race, according to provisional results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) at the tallying centre at Makerere University Business School (MUBS).

With results from 847 of the city’s 2,705 polling stations, representing 31.31 percent of the total, Balimwezo has so far secured 47,400 votes, putting him ahead as counting continues.

Incumbent Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago of the Democratic Party (DP) is in second place with 13,456 votes, followed by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Kizito Moses Nsubuga with 11,730 votes. Other candidates are trailing significantly:

  • Independent Naggayi Nabillah Sempala: 923 votes
  • Independent Mao Beatrice: 784 votes
  • FDC’s Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa: 680 votes
  • Independent Eddie Bazira Kibalama: 51 votes
  • Independent Jothan Yamureebire: 60 votes

According to the provisional figures displayed at the tally centre, a total of 76,170 votes have been counted, including 1,086 invalid ballots.

The Electoral Commission (EC) emphasised that these results are preliminary, with tallying ongoing as declaration forms from the remaining polling stations continue to arrive.

The final outcome will only be declared after all results have been received, verified, and fully tallied.

Voting for the Kampala Lord Mayor took place on Thursday, January 22, as part of the broader local government elections, which also included contests for councilors and other municipal posts.
