Super Metro matatu driver arrested after passenger pushed to death in fare dispute

KIAMBU, KENYA — Authorities in Ruiru, Kiambu County, have apprehended a Super Metro matatu driver in connection with the death of a passenger, who was reportedly ejected from the vehicle while it was in motion.

The incident has triggered widespread public outrage, stemming from allegations that the matatu crew, operating on Thika Road, forcibly removed a passenger due to a shortfall in their fare.

Graphic images circulating online depicting the deceased passenger have fueled public anger and condemnation. The matatu involved, bearing registration number KDL 125N, was driven by David Nderitu on the day of the incident.

Reports indicate that David Nderitu and a tout, who was also part of the matatu’s crew, allegedly pushed Gilbert Thuku Kimani from the moving vehicle, resulting in his death.

The incident occurred along Thika Road in the Kahawa Sukari area. Gilbert Thuku Kimani had boarded the matatu in Kahawa Wendani, intending to travel to Thika.

Eyewitnesses claim that Gilbert Thuku Kimani was expected to pay a fare of Ksh.80 but only had Ksh.50. A dispute arose between him and the tout, culminating in him being forced out of the vehicle.

Upon realizing the severity of the situation, the matatu driver sped away from the scene. Law enforcement was alerted, leading to the impoundment of the matatu and the arrest of the driver.

“The vehicle was driven by David Nderitu, who failed to stop where one passenger fell, and he was overran by the rear tyre and he succumbed. We are appealing to those who were inside the vehicle to come out and give us statements on what happened,” Ruiru Police Commander Charles Kibathi said.

“So far the driver has been arrested and the vehicle impounded awaiting inspection…the driver will be charged for causing death by dangerous driving,” he added.

The death of Gilbert Thuku Kimani has left his family in deep shock. A somber atmosphere has settled over their Kandara, Murang’a County home as they grapple with the loss of a father and primary provider.

In the midst of their grief, the family’s primary hope is that those responsible for this tragic act will be held accountable under the full extent of the law. They also express a desire for this incident to serve as a catalyst for ending the reckless matatu culture that has become prevalent in the country.
