NAIROBI, KENYA — In a significant anti-corruption ruling, former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment or a substantial fine of Ksh. 52.5 million. This follows his conviction on charges of conflict of interest in a corruption case involving Ksh. 588 million.

The Milimani Law Courts delivered the verdict on Thursday, additionally barring Waititu from participating in any political elections for a period of seven years.

His wife, Susan Ndung’u, was also found guilty and sentenced to one year in prison or a fine of Ksh. 500,000.

While convicted on corruption charges, both Waititu and his wife were acquitted of three counts of money laundering.

Charles Chege, director of Testimony Enterprises Limited, a co-accused in the case, was handed a severe penalty: a Ksh. 295 million fine or a nine-year prison term.

Beth Wangeci, the second director of Testimony Enterprises Limited, received a lighter sentence of one year in prison or a Ksh. 1 million fine.
