Manafwa man arrested over alleged defilement of 18-month-old granddaughter

MANAFWA, Uganda — Police in Uganda’s Manafwa District are investigating a case of aggravated defilement involving an 18-month-old girl allegedly sexually assaulted by her biological grandfather.

The suspect, identified as Walyamboka Mesilamu, has been arrested and is being held in police custody as investigations into the alleged October 19, 2026 incident continue.

According to the police account, the child’s mother had left the toddler at home with her husband while she went to fetch water.

The father reportedly later took the child to his father’s home before leaving to cut grass for his cattle.

Police allege that the grandfather sexually assaulted the child while his wife was away.

The incident came to light after the child’s mother noticed an unusual condition and sought assistance from a person identified as Ngotowa Emmanuel.

Emmanuel reportedly observed a yellowish discharge, prompting the family to report the matter to police.

Medical examinations subsequently indicated that the child had been sexually assaulted and sustained injuries, according to the information provided by police.

Investigators have since recorded statements from witnesses, examined the child and the suspect, and documented the scene through Scene of Crime Officers as they work to establish the full circumstances of the alleged offence.

The suspect remains in custody as police pursue the investigation.

What Uganda’s law says about aggravated defilement

The case falls under Uganda’s aggravated defilement provisions because the alleged victim is below the age of 14.

Under Section 116 of Uganda’s Penal Code Act, performing a sexual act with a person below 18 constitutes defilement.

The offence becomes aggravated where any of the circumstances specified in the law applies, including where the victim is below 14 years, the offender is a parent, guardian or person in authority over the victim, or the victim has a disability.

A person convicted of aggravated defilement faces the death penalty under the statutory provisions, with the offence triable by the High Court.

However, the ultimate sentence depends on the court’s determination of the case and applicable sentencing principles. Ugandan court decisions have recognised life imprisonment as an alternative where the death sentence is not imposed.

The law also provides for compensation to victims of defilement or aggravated defilement where a conviction is secured.

The investigation in Manafwa remains ongoing, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
