The Nairobi county chief officer says his experience in health, sanitation and customer service has prepared him to lead the capital, as the 2027 gubernatorial contest takes shape.

Geoffrey Mosiria declares 2027 Nairobi Governor bid, floats Wanjiru as deputy

NAIROBI, Kenya — Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has stepped up his campaign for the capital’s top seat, declaring himself the man to fix the city and proposing that Bishop Margaret Wanjiru become his deputy if he wins the 2027 General Election.

Mosiria made the announcement on Sunday, October 11, during a church service at Jesus Is Alive Ministries in Nairobi, hosted by Wanjiru and attended by Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i and other political leaders.

Positioning himself as a practical problem-solver, Mosiria sought to turn his experience in the county administration into a case for his election, arguing that his work across health, environment and customer service had prepared him to lead Nairobi.

“If you want change in Nairobi, Mosiria is the change. Mosiria will fix Nairobi. Sasa nataka nikuwe gavana, mama akiwa deputy wangu. Twende mbele, mama!” he said, addressing Wanjiru.

The proposal appeared to open the door to a possible political alliance between the two, although neither a formal agreement nor a joint campaign arrangement was announced.

In pitching his candidacy, Mosiria promised to draw from the development manifestos of former Nairobi governors Evans Kidero and Mike Sonko, arguing that their plans were not fully implemented during their respective tenures.

He also suggested that his election would enable him to complete projects and initiatives associated with the administration of his current boss, Governor Johnson Sakaja.

“Mimi sitakuja na manifesto, Kidero alikuja na manifesto mzuri, lakini hakupata nafasi ya kuitekeleza kikamilifu…Sonko alikuja na manifesto mzuri, lakini hakumaliza kuimplement. Nitamaliza kuimplement hizo manifesto,” he said.

Mosiria argued that Nairobi could make progress by building on existing development plans rather than introducing new ones without completing previous commitments.

“Mdosi wangu sasa hapo ofisini. Si mnaona mimi ndiye nafanya kazi Nairobi? Sasa nikiingia, nimsaidie kuimplement hiyo manifesto si Nairobi itasonga mbele?” he added.

His remarks effectively place him in a delicate political position: he is seeking to succeed Sakaja while presenting himself as someone who can continue work started under the incumbent and previous administrations.

However, Mosiria did not identify specific projects from the three administrations that he would prioritise or explain how he would finance their completion.

Mosiria, who was flagged by Matiang’i during the church gathering, also invoked the former Interior Cabinet Secretary’s record in government to reinforce his campaign message.

“So mbele yenu ni Mr Fix-it. Kama vile Matiang’i alifix education na Interior, nitafix Nairobi, na mama akiwa nyuma yangu, tutatembea pamoja naye mimi kama gavana wa Nairobi,” he said.

The branding presents Mosiria as a candidate focused on practical solutions to Nairobi’s challenges, including sanitation, healthcare and public service delivery.

He also warned against political violence and the influence of criminal networks, arguing that the capital needed leadership capable of confronting powerful interests.

“Nairobi is too serious to be left to the goons. Nairobi is too serious to be left in the hands of cartels,” he said.

The remarks form part of his effort to distinguish his proposed leadership from what he portrays as a politics driven by intimidation rather than service delivery.

To justify his bid, Mosiria pointed to his experience in several departments within Nairobi City County, saying his previous responsibilities had given him an understanding of the problems facing residents.

He first worked in the public health sector before serving as Chief Officer for Health Facilities. He was transferred to the Environment docket in August 2024 and reassigned to Citizen Engagement and Customer Service in November 2025.

Mosiria cited his work in healthcare, including efforts to improve access to medical services and medication, before highlighting his focus on garbage collection and environmental enforcement.

In his current role, he said he handles complaints from residents and intervenes in cases involving women and children.

His public profile has also grown through highly visible enforcement activities and social media posts documenting his work in the city.

However, his claims about the impact of his interventions will ultimately be measured against verifiable improvements in service delivery, including waste management, healthcare access and the county government’s responsiveness to residents.

Mosiria’s announcement follows weeks of speculation about his political ambitions and consultations with influential figures in Nairobi politics.

Earlier in October, he said he intended to contest the governorship and face Embakasi East MP Babu Owino at the ballot, following discussions with former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko had advised him to pursue the governor’s seat after Mosiria sought his opinion on which elective position he could contest in the 2027 elections.

On Saturday, October 10, Mosiria also shared a photograph with Matiang’i, accompanied by a caption that appeared to suggest he was seeking political guidance and backing.

“Kila mtu ako na babake na kabla uanze safari lazima uanze kwa kuomba babako nafasi,” he wrote.

The photograph and subsequent church appearance have added to speculation about the political support he may secure as he seeks to build a campaign for the capital’s leadership.

Although his appearance alongside Matiang’i signals engagement with Jubilee’s leadership, it does not, on its own, establish that the party has formally endorsed his candidacy.

Mosiria’s declaration adds another contender to an increasingly crowded contest for Nairobi governor.

Among those positioning themselves for the race are Sakaja, who is seeking a second term, Owino, businesswoman Agnes Kagure, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and Wanjiru, who has also expressed political ambitions.

Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri and other political figures have likewise featured in discussions surrounding the contest.

Mosiria’s potential challenge is particularly notable because he currently serves in Sakaja’s administration. A successful campaign would require him to persuade voters that his experience within the county government makes him better placed to lead it, while explaining how his proposed approach would address shortcomings under successive administrations.

His proposed partnership with Wanjiru could also become a significant factor if it develops into a formal alliance, although the political and electoral implications remain uncertain.

For now, Mosiria has placed himself firmly in the race with a message built around continuity, practical administration and a promise to confront the interests he says are holding Nairobi back.

Whether the “Mr Fix-it” brand can translate into a competitive countywide campaign will depend on the strength of his political alliances, the credibility of his proposed priorities and his ability to convince Nairobi voters that he can deliver results beyond the offices he has already held.
