Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga re-emerges after months out of public spotlight
Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has re-emerged in public after months of relative silence.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Mungiki leader and Amani Sasa Foundation chairman Maina Njenga has returned to the public spotlight after months of maintaining a relatively low profile, appearing at a gathering in Rongai on Saturday 22, August 2026.

Njenga was seen participating in the ceremony and dancing to Kikuyu traditional hymns, marking one of his more visible public appearances in recent months.

His re-emergence comes after a period in which he made only limited public appearances, despite remaining a prominent figure in political conversations around the Mt Kenya region.

Njenga’s latest appearance follows several high-profile engagements earlier in the year. In April, he received an honorary doctorate in humanitarian work at a ceremony held in Nyahururu. Records published by the institution that conferred the award list Njenga among recipients of honorary doctorates in humanitarian work on April 18, 2026.

The recognition briefly returned him to the public eye, with Njenga describing the award as recognition of work associated with peace, social justice, humanitarian service and international cooperation.

Njenga’s return to public life also follows the withdrawal of a criminal case that had kept him in court for about 18 months.

In November 2024, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions withdrew charges against Njenga and several co-accused in a Nakuru case involving allegations including unlawful possession of firearms, membership of the outlawed Mungiki group and conspiracy to commit criminal activities.

The prosecution cited insufficient evidence and a lack of cooperation from some witnesses. The court subsequently allowed the withdrawal of the charges.

Njenga had previously described the case as politically motivated, although such claims were his own characterization and were not established by the court.

Since the political upheaval surrounding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Njenga has sought to establish himself as an independent political voice in Mt Kenya.

He has previously participated in political mobilisation in the region and advocated for unity among Mt Kenya leaders, while rejecting politics centred solely on individual personalities.

His political positioning has at times put him on a different path from Gachagua-aligned leaders, as he sought to build his own influence among communities in the region.

Njenga has also spoken about the need for Mt Kenya leaders to maintain a strong voice in national politics and ensure the region remains influential in government.

Ahead of the 2027 General Election, he has indicated an interest in elective politics, with the possibility of seeking a senior county or national position in Laikipia.

Njenga has previously resisted the idea of creating a narrowly regional political party for Mt Kenya, arguing instead for unity around issues affecting the region.

His position has been that political mobilisation should not be reduced to ethnic or regional competition, but should focus on development, representation and the interests of residents.

That message featured prominently during the burial of his father, Stephen Kamunya Njoroge, in Laikipia on December 31, 2025.

Kamunya, who died aged 101 on December 7, was buried at the family home in Laikipia. The ceremony attracted political leaders and became a platform for calls for greater unity and issue-based politics in Mt Kenya.

Njenga and other leaders used the occasion to urge the region to close ranks and speak with a common political voice ahead of the 2027 elections.

Njenga’s political significance stems partly from his past association with the Mungiki movement, an organisation that has been outlawed in Kenya. His public activities have therefore continued to attract attention whenever he re-enters the political arena.

His latest appearance comes at a time when political actors are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections and competing for influence in Mt Kenya.

While Njenga has remained relatively quiet in recent months, his latest public appearance could renew speculation about his political plans and the role he intends to play in the region’s evolving political landscape.

For now, however, his appearance in Rongai represents a return to the public eye after a period of relative political silence.
