YouTube changes how it counts video views

YouTube doubles monetisation threshold for new creators from 2027
YouTube built one of the creator economy's biggest payment systems, but now it is raising the bar for who gets to share in it.

SAN BRUNO, CALIFORNIA, United States — YouTube is set to change how public views are counted across the platform from August 24, introducing a system in which a view will be registered when playback begins, with no minimum watch-time requirement.

The change will apply across video-on-demand content, Shorts and live streams, according to an announcement by YouTube on Monday, August 17.

Under the new system, creators will see a view counted as soon as a video starts playing. YouTube said the move is intended to make its headline view figures a better reflection of the exposure creators receive on the platform.

“Starting 8/24, views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time) across all formats (VOD, Shorts, & Live),” YouTube said.

The change could make the public view count on some content rise more quickly because viewers will no longer have to watch for a minimum period before a play is recorded.

Why YouTube is changing how views are counted

YouTube said the new approach is intended to standardise view counting across its different content formats and give creators a clearer measure of the exposure their content receives.

The platform said the change could also make view figures more useful when creators demonstrate their reach to advertisers and other commercial partners.

“We’re standardising views to reflect creators’ true exposure across YouTube, making it easier to show their value to brand partners,” the platform said.

The change is particularly significant for creators who rely on public view counts as a measure of reach when negotiating brand partnerships.

However, the headline view figure should not be confused with the metrics YouTube uses to assess monetisation and creator eligibility.

Earnings and YouTube Partner Programme eligibility unchanged

YouTube said the change will not affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP).

The distinction is particularly important for Shorts. YouTube has previously introduced a separate “Engaged views” metric in Analytics to show how many viewers continued watching a Short after it started playing.

YouTube says monetisation and YPP eligibility for Shorts continue to rely on engaged views rather than the broader public view count.

That means a higher headline view count following the August 24 change should not automatically translate into higher advertising revenue.

What the change means for creators

For creators, the immediate effect will be a clearer distinction between exposure and engagement.

A video can register a view when playback starts, but that does not necessarily mean the viewer watched a substantial portion of the content.

Creators will therefore need to look beyond the headline view figure when evaluating whether a video is actually performing well.

Metrics such as watch time, audience retention and engaged views will remain important indicators of whether viewers chose to continue watching.

The change also brings YouTube’s general view-counting approach closer to the system it already uses for Shorts. Since March 2025, YouTube has counted a Shorts view when a Short starts playing or replaying, without a minimum watch-time requirement, while retaining engaged views in Analytics as a separate measure.

Another change for YouTube creators

The announcement comes as YouTube continues to adjust its creator and monetisation systems.

The platform has also been making changes to how it evaluates content and participation in the YouTube Partner Programme as it responds to the rapid growth of different forms of creator content.

For creators and brands, the latest view-counting change is likely to make the distinction between reach, engagement and monetisation increasingly important.

From August 24, the number displayed publicly as a video’s views will provide a broader measure of how often content begins playing. The more meaningful question for creators, however, will remain how many of those viewers actually stayed to watch.
