The rise and fall of Anita Among - A story of power, wealth and political reckoning
Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.

KAMPALA, Uganda — Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has confirmed that her bank accounts have been frozen as investigators intensify inquiries into her assets, wealth declarations and alleged financial impropriety.

Among disclosed the development during a meeting with Teso elders and Members of Parliament (MPs) at her residence in Nakasero on Thursday, describing the account freeze as one of the most difficult consequences of the ongoing investigations.

The issue was subsequently raised in an appeal by members of the Teso Parliamentary Group, who said the freezing of Among’s accounts had affected not only her personal finances but also businesses and charitable activities linked to her.

According to the lawmakers, the restrictions have disrupted the livelihoods of people employed through enterprises associated with the former Speaker.

In a message addressed to President Yoweri Museveni, the MPs urged government to consider lifting the restrictions.

“We have witnessed the economic challenges arising from the freezing of her accounts, which have also affected the livelihoods of many people who depend on her lawful enterprises and charitable initiatives,” the lawmakers said.

They further requested that consideration be given to restoring access to the accounts.

“Consideration be given to unfreezing her accounts to enable her to meet her lawful obligations and restore the livelihoods of the many Ugandans whose employment and welfare have been adversely affected.”

Investigation expands

The freezing of Among’s accounts marks the latest development in a widening investigation involving allegations of corruption, wealth declaration irregularities and the management of parliamentary resources.

Investigators from the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) have in recent weeks searched properties linked to the former Speaker in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea.

Security agencies have also seized documents, electronic devices and several luxury vehicles as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The investigation has increasingly extended beyond political leadership and into Parliament’s administrative structures.

In recent days, eight senior Parliament officials were charged before the Anti-Corruption Court with offences including embezzlement, causing financial loss and money laundering.

Prosecutors allege that billions of shillings were improperly diverted from Parliament between 2023 and 2026.

The prosecution of officials who served during Among’s tenure has heightened scrutiny of the former Speaker and intensified public interest in the outcome of the investigations.

Among has consistently maintained that she is cooperating with investigators.

She has also dismissed reports that large sums of cash were recovered during searches conducted at properties linked to her.

The former Speaker withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament and was later succeeded by Jacob Oulanyah’s successor? Wait incorrect. Need not add. Better: “was later replaced by Jacob Oboth Oboth” from source though office unclear. Let’s avoid.

President Museveni has previously urged patience, saying conclusions should await the completion of official investigations.

“The IGG haven’t finished their report. Let us wait for them to complete it,” Museveni reportedly told Among during a recent meeting at State House Entebbe.

The investigations remain ongoing.
