'I'll Knock Him Out': Ofwono Opondo Eyes Parliamentary Seat, Set to Challenge Veteran MP
Ofwono Opondo quits Uganda Media Centre for 2026 MP seat.

KAMPALA, UGANDA — Ofwono Opondo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre and Government Spokesman, has confirmed his intention to step down from his current role to pursue a seat in Parliament, contesting for the position of Member of Parliament (MP) representing the elderly in the upcoming elections.

He plans to challenge Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the current MP for the elderly representing the Eastern Region, and confidently asserted, “I have what it takes to knock him out.”

During his appearance on “The Capital Gang” show, Opondo disclosed that after 26 years of serving as a communicator for various government branches, he believes it is time to transition to the legislative arena and contribute to reform efforts.

He indicated that discussions with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his associates are underway to determine the strategic direction of his campaign.

“I wrote to the President notifying him about the conclusion of my tenure in three months,” Ofwono Opondo revealed, confirming his resignation by the end of the current month, enabling him to participate in the 2026 elections.

    Who is Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu?

Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu is the current Member of Parliament representing the elderly in the Eastern Region of Uganda. He is also the State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, specifically responsible for Elderly Affairs.

He was elected as one of the four MPs representing older persons in the 11th Parliament.

One of his notable achievements, as highlighted in his recent campaign, was his role in advocating for the creation of five parliamentary seats specifically for older persons, ensuring their representation at the highest level of government.

He has also been involved in initiatives aimed at improving the lives of older persons, such as lobbying for government support through programs like SAACOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations) and Operation Wealth Creation.

Gidudu is currently campaigning to retain his seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections, expressing confidence in his track record and the support he has garnered from elders in the Eastern region.
