Museveni takes PDM to Mubende: Assessing anti-poverty progress firsthand

MUBENDE, UGANDA — President Yoweri Museveni has announced his upcoming visit to the Greater Mubende region, where he will dedicate the week to evaluating the progress and efficacy of the Parish Development Model (PDM), Uganda’s key initiative aimed at poverty reduction.

This announcement, disseminated through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, signifies the latest phase of his nationwide tour, designed to rigorously monitor the program’s implementation and engage directly with its beneficiaries.

“This week, I will spend time with the people of Greater Mubende as we assess the PDM in that area,” the President stated.

This visit follows a series of PDM assessment tours conducted by the President across various Ugandan sub-regions, including Acholi, Busoga, Bukedi, and Lango. Throughout these engagements, President Museveni has consistently emphasized the PDM’s pivotal role in transitioning Uganda’s economic base from subsistence livelihoods to commercially viable agriculture and enterprise-driven communities.

Since its inception in 2022, the PDM has facilitated the direct allocation of funds to parishes, empowering households at the grassroots level to participate in income-generating activities.

During his previous tours, the President has routinely highlighted success stories of individuals and families leveraging PDM funds to establish small businesses, enhance agricultural productivity, and gain access to essential services.

In Greater Luweero, for instance, local farmers reported significant increases in maize and poultry production, while in Teso, women’s groups have successfully launched cassava-processing ventures.

President Museveni asserts that these tangible transformations serve as evidence that the PDM is not merely a theoretical policy but a practical instrument for socioeconomic change.

During his visit to Greater Mubende, President Museveni is expected to engage with local leaders, farmers, and youth groups, while also addressing any obstacles impeding the program’s comprehensive implementation.

Analysts suggest that this tour serves a dual purpose, functioning as both a political and developmental strategy—reinforcing accountability and maintaining the government’s connection with the populace.

The Parish Development Model remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s strategic vision to lift 3.5 million households out of poverty and integrate them into the formal money economy.
