NAIROBI, Kenya — ODM leader Oburu Oginga marked his 83rd birthday at Nairobi Hospital on Thursday, October 15, in an emotionally significant moment that coincided with the first anniversary of the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The veteran politician shared photographs of himself in a hospital gown cutting a birthday cake alongside family members, turning what would ordinarily have been a personal celebration into a moment of remembrance for the Odinga family and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

In a message reflecting on the occasion, Oburu described the day as bittersweet, expressing gratitude for another year of life while remembering Raila, whom he affectionately called Baba.

He also thanked his family, Nairobi Hospital staff, ODM members and his personal staff for organising the surprise celebration and supporting him during his recovery.

Oburu singled out his spouses, Ann Oburu and Judith Oburu, as well as ODM trustee Elder Joshua Kawino, for their care and presence.

“Special thanks go to my domestic staff at home and the hardworking team at Pawaa Centre for your dedication, loyalty, and thoughtfulness in putting this together. Your love and presence have made this solemn yet special day truly comforting. May God bless you all abundantly,” he said.

The celebration came as Oburu continued to recover under medical supervision. On Thursday, he disclosed that his doctors had directed him to observe strict bed rest and avoid public appearances, preventing him from attending the commemoration of Raila’s death in Bondo, Siaya County. He said he was responding well to treatment.

A birthday overshadowed by a national remembrance

The date carries particular significance for the Odinga family and Raila’s supporters. The former prime minister died in India on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment, prompting nationwide mourning and tributes to his decades-long involvement in Kenyan politics. His death was officially announced by President William Ruto.

For Oburu, the anniversary brings a personal loss into a public moment. His birthday celebration and his tribute to Raila illustrate how family grief and public remembrance can converge around a figure whose political career shaped the lives and loyalties of many Kenyans.

Raila’s influence extended beyond his leadership of ODM. His political journey was closely associated with constitutional reform, multiparty democracy and successive contests over the country’s political direction. Those elements remain part of how supporters and critics assess his legacy.

The anniversary, however, is not only a reflection on the past. It also comes at a time when ODM continues to navigate its political future following the loss of its most prominent figure.

Oburu’s recovery and ODM’s leadership responsibilities

Oburu’s hospitalisation has drawn public attention partly because of his position as ODM leader and Siaya senator. His latest message offered a personal update through photographs and expressions of gratitude, while his statement about doctors’ instructions clarified why he could not attend the anniversary gathering in person.

His health should be treated as a personal and medical matter, with details limited to what he and authorised representatives have disclosed. At the same time, his public role makes continuity in party leadership a legitimate matter of political interest.

The question for ODM is how it sustains its organisational work, communicates its positions and maintains cohesion as it honours Raila’s legacy under a different leadership structure.

Oburu has said the party’s strategic machinery remains active, but the longer-term implications will be measured through its decisions, internal processes and public political activity rather than assumptions drawn from his absence at a single event.

Remembering Raila beyond the anniversary

The public remembrance of Raila reflects the depth of his place in Kenya’s political history. His supporters continue to associate him with the pursuit of political reform and representation, while his career also remains subject to debate over strategy, alliances and the outcomes of the political choices he made.

An anniversary can provide space to recognise that legacy, but it can also renew questions about how the ideas associated with a departed leader are carried forward. For ODM, that means preserving its institutional identity while responding to a political landscape that has changed since Raila’s death.

For Oburu, Thursday’s celebration was first a family occasion: a birthday marked during recovery and a day made more difficult by the memory of his younger brother. For the wider public, it was also a reminder of the personal losses behind political history.

As Kenya marked one year since Raila’s death, Oburu’s message brought those two realities together—gratitude for life and remembrance of a brother whose absence continues to resonate within his family, his party and the country’s political conversation.
