MOMBASA, Kenya — Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested an employee of the State Department for Immigration, Border Control and Citizen Services over allegations of soliciting a bribe to facilitate the processing of a Kenyan passport.

The suspect, Moses Karima Chandugu, was arrested after a complaint was lodged with the commission’s Lower Coast Regional Office in Mombasa, EACC said.

Preliminary investigations established that Chandugu allegedly agreed to receive KSh12,000 to expedite the processing of a passport, according to the anti-corruption agency.

EACC detectives subsequently arrested the official and took him to Central Police Station in Mombasa, where he was processed before being presented in court.

The court released Chandugu on a KSh20,000 cash bail, pending the completion of investigations.

EACC said the arrest formed part of its efforts to combat bribery and corruption at government service delivery points, particularly where citizens access essential public services.

“EACC reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points and enhancing the quality of public services for all citizens,” the commission said in a statement.

The allegations against Chandugu have not been proved in court, and he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The commission has continued to encourage members of the public to report suspected cases of bribery and corruption through its reporting channels.
