Azimio announces major rebrand, welcomes Matiang'i ahead of 2027 election

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s opposition coalition, Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party, has unveiled an ambitious restructuring and rebranding programme as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The coalition announced the sweeping reforms after a Joint Council and National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Nairobi chaired by Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, with the resolutions later communicated by Secretary General Caroli Omondi.

The changes are intended to strengthen Azimio’s organisational structure, expand its political base and consolidate opposition forces as campaigns for the next election begin to take shape.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Omondi said the coalition had resolved to reorganise its leadership structures and governing organs while embarking on a comprehensive rebranding exercise.

“The Council resolved to reorganise the party structures, the various organs of the party, as well as move forward with the rebranding of the Azimio Coalition,” he said.

The reorganisation is expected to redefine the coalition’s leadership architecture and political identity as it prepares to challenge President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance in the next polls.

As part of the restructuring, Azimio admitted several high-profile political figures into its governing council, the coalition’s top decision-making organ.

They include:

  • Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i
  • Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya
  • Former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti

Their inclusion is expected to strengthen Azimio’s leadership bench as the coalition broadens its national appeal.

The coalition also resolved to widen its political coalition by inviting the Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K), led by Eugene Wamalwa, to rejoin Azimio, subject to the party’s internal approval processes.

Further invitations were extended to:

  • Umoja na Maendeleo Party, led by former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza
  • People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by Omingo Magara
  • Democratic Party (DP), led by former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi

The move signals Azimio’s determination to reunite opposition parties under a broader political umbrella ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition mandated Kalonzo to initiate discussions with other opposition formations with the aim of building a wider alliance capable of mounting a formidable electoral challenge.

Among the political groups targeted for engagement are:

  • Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democratic Coalition Party (DCP)
  • Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party (PLP)
  • The United Green Movement
  • The Linda Mwananchi Movement, once its registration is completed

The outreach reflects growing efforts within the opposition to consolidate support and avoid fragmentation before the 2027 presidential race.

Azimio’s announcement comes amid increasing political realignments across Kenya’s opposition landscape, with several former Cabinet secretaries, governors and political leaders repositioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The coalition’s planned restructuring, expansion and rebranding are expected to shape its campaign strategy as it seeks to rebuild momentum and present a united front in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.
