NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyan influencer Sasha DMB has ignited debate on social media after calling for tougher action against individuals who share intimate private videos of former partners without their consent.
In a post shared on Instagram, the content creator condemned the practice of leaking private images and videos following the breakdown of relationships, arguing that those responsible should face legal consequences.
“Men who leak women’s private videos simply because she moved on or is no longer interested in you should be arrested ASAP,” Sasha wrote.
Her remarks have since generated widespread discussion online, with supporters describing the non-consensual sharing of intimate content as a serious violation of privacy and trust.
‘Shared in confidence’
Sasha argued that private photos and videos exchanged within a relationship are typically shared on the understanding that they will remain confidential.
According to the influencer, ending a relationship does not give either party the right to distribute intimate material that was shared privately.
“She sent you that video in confidence and it was supposed to be between you two ONLY,” she wrote.
Digital rights advocates have long argued that the non-consensual distribution of intimate images can have severe consequences for victims, including emotional distress, reputational harm, harassment, job loss and mental health challenges.
Growing concern over online abuse
The issue has increasingly attracted attention across Kenya and other countries as smartphones and social media platforms make it easier for private content to be shared widely within minutes.
Cybersecurity experts warn that once intimate content is uploaded online, victims often struggle to fully remove it, even when platforms take action.
According to digital safety organisations, revenge-related image sharing remains one of the most damaging forms of online abuse because it combines privacy violations with public humiliation.
Calls for respect after breakups
Sasha also urged former partners to maintain respect for each other after relationships end.
She argued that disagreements, heartbreak or separation should not become justification for exposing private content.
“Maintain the respect when you part ways. We’re adults and should act like it.”
The influencer further criticised individuals who use intimate content as a tool for revenge or coercion.
Her comments resonated with many social media users who said trust should survive the end of a romantic relationship.
Legal implications
Kenya has strengthened legal protections around privacy and cybercrime in recent years.
Legal experts note that the sharing of intimate images without consent can potentially attract criminal penalties under various laws dealing with privacy violations, cyber harassment and unlawful publication of personal information, depending on the circumstances of each case.

Advocates have nonetheless continued to call for stronger enforcement and greater public awareness, arguing that many victims remain reluctant to report incidents due to fear of stigma or further exposure.
Public reaction
Sasha’s post quickly attracted support from followers and digital rights advocates, many of whom praised her for speaking publicly about an issue often surrounded by shame and silence.
Supporters argued that intimate moments shared during a relationship should remain private regardless of how the relationship ends.
For many backing her message, the principle is straightforward: the end of a relationship should never mean the loss of a person’s right to privacy, dignity and consent.
