NAIROBI, Kenya — With less than two weeks remaining before Kenya’s annual tax return filing deadline, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is encouraging taxpayers to use its WhatsApp-based Shuru Chatbot to file returns and access key tax services more conveniently.
The digital platform, launched in April 2026, allows taxpayers to interact with KRA services directly through WhatsApp, reducing the need to visit tax offices or navigate multiple online portals.
Available through KRA’s official WhatsApp number, +254 711 099 999, the chatbot is designed to simplify tax compliance for individual taxpayers, freelancers, traders, small businesses and other taxpayers across the country.
According to KRA, the platform forms part of broader efforts to digitise tax administration and improve access to services through widely used mobile technologies.
Filing tax returns through WhatsApp
The Shuru Chatbot enables taxpayers to file various tax returns directly from their smartphones.
To access the service, users must save KRA’s WhatsApp number, open a chat and send the word “Hi” or “Menu” to initiate a conversation with the virtual assistant.
After selecting the preferred service, taxpayers are required to log in using their KRA PIN. A One-Time Password (OTP) is then sent to the phone number registered with KRA for verification before access is granted.
The chatbot subsequently guides users through the filing process by prompting them to provide the necessary information before submitting the return electronically.
eTIMS invoices available through the platform
In addition to tax filing, the chatbot allows businesses to generate Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) invoices directly from WhatsApp.
Users can create compliant invoices by entering details such as goods or services sold, quantities and selling prices. Once the information is verified, the system generates an invoice that can be downloaded or shared with customers instantly.

- KRA PIN registration
- Filing of Turnover Tax (TOT) returns
- Value Added Tax (VAT) returns
- Pay As You Earn (PAYE) returns
- Rental Income Tax returns

The authority maintains that the Shuru Chatbot provides a faster and more accessible alternative for taxpayers seeking to comply with their obligations without visiting KRA offices.
