Former NIS officer and Raila Odinga’s cousin Job Odima Atinga dies
The late Raila Odinga’s cousin, Mr. Job Odima Atinga, a former National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer, who passed away.

KISUMU, Kenya — The family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is mourning the death of Job Odima Atinga, a former senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer whose career in Kenya’s security sector spanned several years.

His death was announced on Friday, July 31, 2026, by Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who described him as a dedicated public servant whose career was defined by professionalism, integrity and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s security.

Ruth Odinga said she had visited the family home in Alego Kakan to condole with relatives following Atinga’s untimely death.

“This evening, I came to Alego Kakan to sit with the family of my late cousin, Mr. Job Odima Atinga, as we mourn his untimely passing. Job served this country with distinction as a senior officer in the National Intelligence Service, and his final posting at the DCI Nyanza Regional Office demonstrates a life that was dedicated to the peace and security of our nation,” she said.

Atinga served for many years in the National Intelligence Service, rising through the ranks to become a senior officer entrusted with key national security responsibilities.

Throughout his career, he played a role in intelligence and security operations aimed at protecting the country’s stability and was widely respected by colleagues for his professionalism, discretion and dedication to duty.

According to Ruth Odinga, his final assignment before leaving public service was at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nyanza Regional Office, a posting she said reflected the confidence Kenya’s security agencies had in his experience and leadership.

She described him as a man who devoted his life to public service, working quietly behind the scenes to promote peace and protect the country’s security interests.

“His was a career built on integrity, courage, and quiet, selfless service to Kenya. To my sister-in-law, Syprose Odupe Atinga, and to Job’s children: our family grieves with you. We will continue to walk with you through this difficult season. Fare thee well, Job. Your service to this nation will not be forgotten.”

Ruth Odinga also extended her condolences to Atinga’s widow, Syprose Odupe Atinga, his children and the wider family, assuring them of continued support as they navigate the difficult period of mourning.

She said his years of dedicated service to the country would remain part of his lasting legacy and that his contribution to Kenya’s security would be remembered with gratitude.

The family is expected to announce funeral and burial arrangements in the coming days.
