'Stillborn' baby found alive after mother killed in hit-and-run accident

BUSIA, Kenya — Residents of Kocholia in Teso North Sub-county, within Busia County are grappling with shock and disbelief after a premature baby survived a fatal road accident that claimed the life of her pregnant mother.

The infant, now widely referred to as Baby Sharon, was discovered alive at the scene of the crash on Sunday night, moments after the incident occurred near a local bridge.

According to witnesses, the mother, who was approximately seven months pregnant and due to deliver in July 2026, was struck by a long-distance truck as she walked towards Kocholia. She died instantly.

Eyewitnesses said the truck was overtaking another vehicle when it veered off its lane and hit the woman before speeding away from the scene.

In a deeply distressing turn, the force of the impact is reported to have caused severe abdominal trauma, leading to the premature delivery of the baby at the roadside.

Emergency responders, including residents and police officers, arrived to find the infant alive despite the circumstances surrounding her birth.

The baby was immediately rushed to Kocholia Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical attention.

A hospital social worker, Oscar Omanyala, said Baby Sharon sustained a fractured arm during the incident.

“She developed anaemia and required urgent specialised care,” he said.

The infant was later transferred to Busia County Referral Hospital on Wednesday for a blood transfusion and further management in the Newborn Unit (NBU), where she remains under close medical supervision.

Medical experts note that survival in such traumatic preterm deliveries is extremely rare and typically dependent on rapid emergency response and access to neonatal care.

Omanyala appealed to members of the public to support the child with essential supplies, including clothing and baby care items, as she continues to receive treatment.

Authorities have yet to establish the identity of the deceased woman.

However, documents recovered from her belongings suggest she may have been a resident of Malaba, a border town straddling Kenya and Uganda.

Teso North Sub-County Police Commander Charles Chepkong’a confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to trace the driver responsible.

He urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the arrest of the suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the crash.

This incident comes amid growing concern over road safety in Kenya. Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority indicates that pedestrian fatalities remain a significant proportion of road accident deaths, often linked to reckless overtaking and night-time driving.

Busia County, particularly areas around Malaba and Kocholia, has previously been flagged as a high-risk corridor due to heavy cross-border truck traffic along the Northern Corridor.

Medical professionals also highlight that survival rates for babies born before 32 weeks, especially under traumatic conditions, remain low without immediate neonatal intervention, underscoring the critical role played by first responders in this case.
