NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyan amateur boxer Portifas Odipo, widely known as “Majembe,” is set to receive a substantial financial windfall and a range of high-value perks following his victory in the widely publicised Vurugu Championship bout.

The 21-year-old secured a fourth-round Technical Knockout (TKO) win over Ferdinand Omondi, alias “Mbavu Destroyer,” on April 4 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, in a contest that drew nationwide attention and marked one of the most talked-about sporting events in Kenya this year.

Among the immediate rewards is a KSh1 million prize pledged by President William Ruto, part of a broader KSh4 million contribution made in support of the event. The funding included KSh1 million allocated to each fighter, alongside additional resources aimed at supporting the bout.

Event organiser Oga Obinna had also announced a KSh1 million prize for the winner, further boosting Majembe’s earnings.

Beyond cash, corporate sponsorships have significantly increased the value of Majembe’s victory.

A betting company associated with the event pledged a brand-new Toyota Noah, estimated at around KSh4 million, for the winner, a reward Majembe is expected to claim. Reports also indicate he could receive a Taro GP1 sports bike, valued at approximately KSh385,000.

Additional non-monetary benefits include a one-year gym membership and a supply of fitness supplements, reinforcing his transition into a more structured athletic career.

Industry observers say Majembe’s rapid rise, fuelled by social media popularity and the fight’s viral reach, positions him for further commercial success. He has already been linked to endorsement deals and brand partnerships, a trend increasingly common among athletes emerging from digitally driven sporting events.

The bout attracted significant backing from political figures and public personalities, reflecting the event’s national profile.

Oburu Odinga contributed KSh1 million, while Embakasi East MP Babu Owino purchased more than 500 tickets for fans. Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri donated KSh2 million.

Dorcas Gachagua contributed KSh400,000, while George Ruto donated KSh500,000. Oketch Salah also added KSh200,000 to support the event.

However, it remains unclear how much of the total contributions will go directly to the fighters, as some funds were likely allocated to event logistics and promotion.

Despite the loss, Mbavu Destroyer is also expected to benefit financially and professionally from the event’s exposure.

He is set to receive KSh1 million from the President’s pledge and has already secured significant social media traction in the build-up to the fight.

Analysts note that the visibility gained through the bout could translate into endorsement opportunities, highlighting how viral sporting events are reshaping pathways to commercial success for emerging athletes in Kenya.
