NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a scheduled temporary shutdown of its iTax platform to allow for system maintenance.

In a public notice issued on Saturday, the authority said the platform will be unavailable from 8:00pm on Sunday, 1 March 2026, until 12:00am on Monday, 2 March, a four-hour window during which all iTax services will be suspended.

The tax agency advised users to complete urgent transactions in advance to minimise disruption.

“We regret any inconvenience caused,” reads the notice.

iTax is Kenya’s primary online tax administration system, used by millions of individuals and businesses to file returns, make payments and access revenue services. Since its launch in 2012, the platform has been central to the country’s shift from manual tax processing to digital compliance.

Through iTax, taxpayers can manage obligations including Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), Value Added Tax (VAT), Corporate Income Tax and Turnover Tax. The system also facilitates PIN registration, tax compliance certificate applications and access to official tax documentation.

KRA says regular upgrades are necessary to enhance system performance, strengthen cybersecurity safeguards and improve user experience as transaction volumes grow.

According to KRA, “iTax is central to our mission of making tax collection efficient and transparent.”

The maintenance comes as KRA continues to expand digital tax enforcement tools, including data-driven compliance monitoring and integration with mobile money and banking systems. The authority has increasingly relied on technology to widen the tax base and curb revenue leakages.

In recent years, KRA has rolled out electronic invoicing requirements and strengthened VAT reporting frameworks as part of broader reforms aimed at boosting domestic revenue collection.

With iTax operating on a 24-hour cycle, even short outages can affect return filings, payment processing and compliance confirmations. However, scheduled maintenance is typically conducted during late-night hours to reduce impact on taxpayers.

KRA has encouraged users to monitor official communication channels for updates once the system is restored.
