KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s military leadership is in mourning following the death of Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Land Forces, according to reports citing security sources.

The Daily Monitor reported that the senior officer died after a period of illness, though official details surrounding the cause of death remain limited. As of publication, the UPDF had not released a comprehensive statement outlining the circumstances of his passing, funeral arrangements, or burial programme.

Maj Gen Takirwa was among the most senior operational commanders within the UPDF, entrusted with oversight of land force operations at a time when Uganda’s military plays an increasingly visible role in both domestic security and regional deployments.

He previously served as Commander of the UPDF Second Division, headquartered in Mbarara, where he oversaw security operations across western Uganda. His tenure was marked by coordination of internal security operations and the management of frontline military units in strategically sensitive areas.

Within military circles, Maj Gen Takirwa was regarded as a disciplined and career officer who rose steadily through the ranks over decades of service.

Colleagues have described him as a commander deeply committed to operational readiness, troop welfare, and institutional stability within the army.

His death comes at a time when the UPDF continues to maintain a strong presence in regional peace support missions, including operations in Somalia and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside its domestic security responsibilities.

News of his passing has reportedly shocked sections of the military fraternity and communities where he previously served.

Tributes from senior officers, political leaders, and regional counterparts are expected in the coming days.

The UPDF is expected to formally announce burial arrangements, military honours, and clarify the succession plan for the Deputy Commander Land Forces position once internal consultations are concluded.
