KAJIADO, Kenya — The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has retained its political stronghold in Kajiado County after its candidate, Mpusia Amos, was officially declared the Member of the County Assembly (MCA)-elect for Purko Ward following the November 27, 2025 by-election.

In a contest marked by an impressive voter turnout of 80.5 percent, Mpusia secured a decisive victory against his closest challengers from the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that Mpusia garnered 2,805 votes, representing 53 percent of the total votes cast.

His main rival, Simon Sanare Saidimu of the DCP, managed 1,522 votes (39 percent), while ODM’s Daniel Naikuni trailed significantly with 298 votes (7.6 percent). Out of the 4,848 registered voters in the ward, 3,900 turned out to exercise their democratic right.

A ‘Tutam Zone’ victory

The by-election was triggered by the death of former MCA Simon Saitoti earlier this year. In his acceptance speech, Mpusia attributed his victory to divine intervention and the loyalty of the electorate to the ruling party.

“I also thank my competitors for a peaceful campaign, and I also want to thank the UDA leaders, as this win means Purko is still yellow and a Tutam zone,” Mpusia said.

He further extended an olive branch to his rivals, pledging an inclusive leadership style for the residents of Kajiado Central Constituency.

“I want to thank everyone, and I promise to work with my opponents to empower the people of Purko ward,” he added.

Political implications

The victory has been hailed by party stalwarts as a significant indicator of the region’s political pulse.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Katoo Ole Metito was among the first to congratulate the MCA-elect, viewing the win as a strategic consolidation of support in the county.

“Congratulations, Hon. Amos Mpusia, MCA-Elect Purko Ward. This is a big statement for our political future as a county. Thank you, Purko Ward,” Metito stated.

Purko Ward remains a critical electoral unit within Kajiado Central Constituency, one of the five constituencies that make up Kajiado County.
