MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA, United States — WhatsApp appears to be moving toward a significant evolution in its platform architecture, with reports indicating that its parent company, Meta, is actively developing support for user-defined usernames.

This change is being viewed as a direct response to increasing privacy demands from users who prefer to connect using handles, similar to systems employed by social media platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

Until now, the core functionality of WhatsApp has been inextricably linked to a user’s phone number. However, new developments suggest a major shift is imminent, one that will allow users to communicate without publicly disclosing their personal telephone numbers.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp updates, the company has taken a critical step toward implementing the feature. The report indicates that a new link has been added to the application’s settings, which will enable users to reserve a username in advance.

While the feature is not yet available, not even in beta testing, the introduction of a dedicated reservation system strongly suggests an active and accelerated development schedule.

This change is expected to fundamentally transform how individuals connect and interact on the platform.

Once the feature is launched, users will be able to search for, add, and communicate with friends, family, and other contacts solely using their chosen usernames.

Earlier reports detailing the functionality suggest that once a username is set, the user’s phone number will remain hidden from others, providing a substantial enhancement to user privacy and safety.

While Meta has not yet made an official confirmation regarding the feature, the move signals the company’s commitment to adapting WhatsApp to better address modern privacy standards and user expectations.
