NAIROBI, KENYA — An employee of the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) who was arrested on suspicion of academic certificate forgery has been brought before the court.

Edwin Amagola Munyeti was apprehended on Monday by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore on Tuesday, the court was informed that Mr. Munyeti, a former Marketing Assistant at NAWASCO, allegedly used a forged Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate to gain employment.

He is accused of falsely claiming that the certificate was genuine and issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

According to the EACC, this alleged forgery resulted in Mr. Munyeti unlawfully receiving Ksh 9,080,267 in salary payments from public funds between March 2010 and December 2023.

The EACC had recommended five charges, including forgery and fraudulent acquisition of public property, which were subsequently approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

During the court proceedings, Mr. Munyeti entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.

The prosecution, represented by Thelma Nanjay, requested that the case be scheduled for a mention to facilitate the serving of documents to the accused and for pretrial proceedings.

The accused, in his defense, requested leniency regarding bond terms, stating that he is a family man and currently unemployed.

As the prosecution did not object to bail, the court granted Mr. Munyeti a cash bail of Ksh 200,000, with the alternative of a Ksh 500,000 bond.

The case is scheduled for mention on May 26, 2025, for pretrial directions in open court.
