NAIROBI, KENYA — In a sting operation conducted on Wednesday morning, detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested three police officers caught red-handed extorting motorists and civilians in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

The officers, identified as Corporal Oscar Serem Biwott, Constable Simon Kiplagat Nyunyutik, and Constable Edwin Benedict Mubweka, were apprehended at the Globe Cinema roundabout after allegedly collecting Ksh.48,250 in bribes within a two-hour period.

The officers, all stationed at the Central Police Station, were subsequently escorted to the EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre for further questioning and to record statements.

“Following numerous complaints from motorists, bodaboda riders and the general public regarding traffic police officers extorting money from motorists at Globe Cinema roundabout in the guise of traffic law enforcement, the Commission conducted investigations on several days and confirmed the allegations,” a source at EACC told Vivid Voice News.

The three suspects are currently being held at Kilimani Police Station pending arraignment in court. This arrest follows closely on the heels of the EACC’s recent launch of an audit into the National Police Service (NPS) operations.

The aim of this audit is to pinpoint and address vulnerabilities within the security forces that may facilitate corrupt practices.
