Moses Kuria hints at possible Ruto-Gachagua reunion ahead of 2027 election
Kenya President William Ruto (centre) looks on as Rigathi Gachagua (right) and Uhuru Kenyatta (left) shake hands in Nairobi in September 2022 during Ruto’s inauguration ceremony.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has suggested that President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could reunite politically ahead of the 2027 General Election, despite their bitter fallout and Gachagua’s subsequent impeachment.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Kuria challenged Gachagua to publicly declare that he has no political agreement with Ruto and will not enter into one before the 2027 election.

Kuria said Kenya’s political landscape could produce unexpected alliances as politicians position themselves for the next presidential contest.

“I’ve asked him yesterday to go to the moderator of the PCEA church. Take the Bible and say to the world, one, that he doesn’t have a deal currently with William Ruto. And two, that he’s not going to have one before 2027,” Kuria said.

He did not provide evidence that Ruto and Gachagua currently have a political agreement.

Kuria points to possible US meeting

Kuria also referred to planned overseas travel in September, claiming that Gachagua was preparing to travel to the United States while Ruto was also expected to be there.

He suggested that the two politicians could potentially reach an agreement during that period, although he stopped short of providing evidence that such a meeting or deal was planned.

“Rigathi is preparing for an overseas trip in September in the US. Ruto will be there in September. I don’t know what I’m saying, but watch this space,” Kuria said.

The remarks amount to Kuria’s political prediction and do not establish that Ruto and Gachagua are negotiating a reunion.

Gachagua has rejected Ruto alliance

Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has repeatedly positioned himself in opposition to Ruto and has been involved in efforts to build a coalition capable of challenging the President in 2027.

The former Deputy President has also criticised the Ruto administration and participated in political activities with other opposition figures seeking to agree on a joint presidential candidate.

Kuria’s suggestion therefore comes at a time when Gachagua is actively cultivating an opposition platform and publicly presenting himself as part of the effort to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Ruto and Gachagua’s fallout

Ruto and Gachagua were elected President and Deputy President respectively on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)-led Kenya Kwanza ticket in the 2022 General Election.

Their relationship subsequently deteriorated, with Gachagua accusing sections of the administration of undermining him and Ruto’s allies accusing the former Deputy President of political insubordination and pursuing a separate political agenda.

The dispute culminated in an impeachment process in Parliament in 2024.

The National Assembly passed the impeachment motion before the Senate subsequently upheld the charges, resulting in Gachagua’s removal from office.

Gachagua challenged the process in court, but the High Court later upheld his removal. His legal challenge has continued through the appellate process.

Political realignments gather pace

The possibility of a Ruto-Gachagua rapprochement would represent a major shift in Kenya’s political landscape, given the depth of their previous political confrontation.

However, there is currently no publicly confirmed agreement between the two politicians indicating that they intend to work together in 2027.

Ruto is seeking a second term, while Gachagua has emerged as one of the opposition figures seeking to consolidate support against the President.

Other opposition leaders, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, are also positioning themselves ahead of the election.

The opposition has increasingly discussed the possibility of rallying behind a single presidential candidate to maximise its chances against Ruto.

Whether Gachagua remains firmly within that opposition arrangement or eventually explores a different political path is likely to become clearer as the 2027 election approaches.

For now, Kuria’s comments have reopened speculation about one of the most consequential potential political realignments in the country — but there is no publicly established evidence that Ruto and Gachagua have agreed to reunite politically.
