NAIROBI, Kenya — A prominent Kenyan mental health researcher was shot dead in a suspected targeted assassination in Nairobi on Wednesday 29, July 2026 morning, triggering an intensive multi-agency investigation into what detectives believe was a carefully coordinated execution.

Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a respected scholar and director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), was killed during her morning commute after gunmen ambushed the Uber vehicle she was travelling in and shot her at close range.

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) say early findings point to a premeditated attack rather than a random act of violence, with detectives now pursuing multiple leads, including previous reports that the researcher had received threats to her life.

The shooting occurred at around 9:00 a.m. at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road in Nairobi.

Witnesses told investigators that a Toyota Prado had been parked at the junction before the Uber carrying Dr. Mutiso arrived and stopped nearby.

Moments later, a motorcycle carrying three men approached the vehicle.

According to witness accounts, one of the assailants dismounted and opened fire, shooting Dr. Mutiso twice in the head at close range before fleeing on the motorcycle.

The Toyota Prado reportedly sped away immediately after the shooting, leading investigators to suspect that both vehicles were part of the same operation.

The Uber driver immediately rushed the injured researcher to the Kenyatta National Hospital Emergency Centre, but doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

Homicide detectives and forensic officers later secured the Uber vehicle at the hospital as investigations commenced.

The vehicle has since been detained as a key exhibit after ballistic experts recovered two spent cartridges from inside.

Detectives are also examining mobile phones belonging to both Dr. Mutiso and the Uber driver as they seek to reconstruct the victim’s final movements, communications and possible meetings before the attack.

The Uber driver remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as they piece together the events leading to the fatal shooting.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby roads and businesses in an effort to trace the movements of both the motorcycle and the Toyota Prado believed to have been involved.

One of the central lines of inquiry focuses on reports that Dr. Mutiso had previously raised concerns about her safety.

According to investigators, she had recently reported receiving direct threats at Kilimani Police Station before the matter was referred to Satellite Police Station under Dagoretti Division for further investigations.

Detectives are now examining whether those earlier threats are directly connected to Wednesday’s killing.

DCI Director Mohamed Amin said investigations were progressing rapidly as detectives pursue the suspects, who remain at large.

As part of the investigation, detectives visited Dr. Mutiso’s residence in Riara, where they interviewed her husband and colleagues in an effort to establish whether her personal life, professional work or recent activities could provide clues to the motive behind the killing.

Her body has since been transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Dr. Mutiso was widely recognised for her contribution to mental health research and policy in Kenya and across Africa through her work at AFRIMEB.

Her killing has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s academic, medical and research communities, with colleagues describing her as a leading voice in advancing mental health care and evidence-based policy on the continent.

The assassination also raises renewed concerns over targeted killings in Kenya, particularly attacks carried out in broad daylight using highly coordinated methods that often involve multiple vehicles and armed assailants.

Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report it to the nearest police station or contact the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
