LWENGO, Uganda — A tragic road collision in Lwengo District has claimed the lives of seven family members in the early hours of Saturday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 4:00 AM on December 27, 2025, at Njagalakasayi Village along the Masaka-Mbarara road.

The crash involved a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number UBH 476W, which was traveling from Masaka toward Mbarara, and an oncoming silver Fuso truck, registration number UBP 510V.

Preliminary police findings suggest that the Toyota Fielder strayed from its lane into the path of the oncoming truck, resulting in a violent head-on impact.

Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the severity of the incident.

“The impact was fatal. Four occupants of the Toyota Fielder died instantly at the scene. During subsequent rescue and recovery operations, three more bodies were retrieved from inside the same vehicle, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven,” SP Kasirye said.

Traffic police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to manage the site and restore the flow of traffic.

The remains of the seven victims, all identified as family members traveling from Kampala, were transported to the Masaka City Mortuary for postmortem examinations. Their identities are currently being withheld pending the notification of their next of kin.

Both vehicles involved in the crash have been towed to the local police station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

While the primary cause is suspected to be reckless driving, authorities noted that a comprehensive investigation into the exact circumstances is still underway.

In light of the tragedy, SP Kasirye issued a stern reminder to the public regarding road safety during the holidays. He urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, drive with heightened responsibility, and exercise extreme caution to prevent further loss of life during the busy festive period.
