NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has reported a somber toll from the nationwide demonstrations held on Wednesday, June 25, marking the first anniversary of the contentious anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

The human rights watchdog confirmed at least eight fatalities and over 400 casualties, including protesters, police officers, and journalists.

According to a statement released by KNCHR Vice Chairperson Dr. Raymond Nyeris, the eight deaths resulted from incidents across six different counties: Machakos (2), Makueni (2), Nakuru (1), Kiambu (1), Uasin Gishu (1), and Nyandarua (1).

While the majority of the over 400 reported casualties received treatment and were subsequently discharged, 83 individuals required referral for specialized medical attention, with eight of these cases involving gunshot wounds.

The Commission further noted that 61 individuals were detained across various police stations nationwide, predominantly in Nairobi County.

The KNCHR also highlighted concerns regarding the integrity of the demonstrations, stating that information indicated infiltration by criminal elements.

A human rights group – Amnesty Kenya – put the death toll as high as 16.

“The Commission received information of infiltration of the demonstrations by Criminal Elements and Destruction of Property. Credible reports of “hired goons” infiltrating protests in Eldoret, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kajiado and Kisumu,” the statement read in part. It further elaborated on their actions: “These groups have engaged in violence, looting and property destruction.”

Additionally, the Commission strongly condemned the recent directive issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), instructing all media houses to cease live broadcasts of the protests. The KNCHR asserted that this move directly infringes upon the public’s constitutional right to access information.

The Commission concluded its statement by affirming its commitment to ongoing oversight: “The Commission will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates on the promotion and protection of Human Rights in the country during this period.”
