UCC, Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Centre launch free film training for Ugandan youth

KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has collaborated with the Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Centre to deliver a complimentary, five-day specialist training workshop aimed at young individuals aspiring to enter the film industry.

Speaking to over 50 participants at the opening ceremony held at the Bat Valley Primary School auditorium, Leonard Amanya, a film producer, marketing, and promotion specialist at the UCC, emphasized the commission’s dedication to enhancing the capabilities of the local film sector.

The “Introduction to Film Production” workshop encompasses the foundational elements of pre-production, production, and post-production.

Attendees include individuals from Masaka, Fort Portal, Juba (South Sudan), and Metropolitan Kampala, comprising film commentators, entertainment journalists, and producers, hosts, and anchors of radio entertainment programs.

Amanya, who holds the distinction of being the first Ugandan member of the International Emmys Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, highlighted that similar training workshops have previously been conducted in Lira (northern Uganda), Tororo (eastern Uganda), Ntungamo (western Uganda), and Mubende (central Uganda).

The curriculum covers areas such as camera handling, editing, sound systems, scriptwriting, film directing, and cinematography. Amanya encouraged the youth to view the filmmaking industry as a viable and promising profession.

Mariam Ndagire, the director of the Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Centre, stated that her institution specializes in training young people for the film industry and has successfully empowered numerous individuals to pursue careers in the field.
