Teen hacks brother to death in Bungoma after quarrel over memory card

BUNGOMA, Kenya — A dispute between two brothers over a memory card in Cheptais, Bungoma County, tragically escalated when one attacked the other with a panga, resulting in his death, police have reported.

The incident involved a 19-year-old form three student and his 15-year-old brother, a grade eight student in the area.

According to police reports, the younger brother used a sharp panga to inflict fatal injuries to the elder sibling’s neck and head.

Following the attack, he fled the scene. Police indicated that the altercation occurred in their home on May 27 after an argument about the memory card became confrontational.

“Efforts to trace him are ongoing,” police stated as they transferred the deceased’s body to the mortuary.

In a separate incident, detectives in Kilifi County are investigating the murder of a 70-year-old man in Ganze. The body of Samuel Thoya Baya was discovered in the village after an attack. Police reported that he had gone to the Dzikunge area for shopping on May 27 when the incident occurred.

The motive behind the killing remains unknown. Authorities have noted a concerning increase in murder cases targeting elderly individuals in the region, prompting campaigns to address this trend.

Further inland, in Koibatek, Baringo County, the body of 40-year-old Jonathan Rono was found in Narasha forest. The body was discovered lying on its back, bearing severe head and hand injuries believed to have been inflicted by a sharp object.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had left his home in Tachasis village for the Arama centre on May 26 but did not return that evening. The motive for this murder is also yet to be determined.

In Trans Nzoia, specifically in Kipsaina, a man identified as Humphrey Wamalwa was found dead following a confrontation with another man over a woman.

Police stated that the assailant accused the deceased of having an affair with his wife, which led to a fatal fight.

The assailant fled the scene in Huruma village. The body has been moved to the mortuary for autopsy and further investigation.

Police have expressed concern over a rising trend in murder cases across the country, noting that up to eight cases are being reported daily, with many remaining under investigation.
