Tyson Fury’s gloves hung up for good? – Promoter Bob Arum weighs in

Tyson Fury's gloves hung up for good? - Promoter Bob Arum weighs in
British former professional boxer Tyson Fury.

Veteran promoter Bob Arum has expressed his belief that Tyson Fury will not reverse his decision to retire from professional boxing, an announcement made by the heavyweight fighter in January.

The 36-year-old British boxer’s unexpected announcement came shortly after suffering his second consecutive defeat to unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO titles.

While Fury has previously declared retirement on multiple occasions throughout his distinguished career, American promoter Arum, who has worked with Fury in the past, anticipates that this decision will be final.

“If I was a betting man I would say he will never fight again,” Arum stated on the 5 Live Boxing podcast with Steve Bunce. He further elaborated, referencing the late Marvin Hagler’s sentiment: “‘a rich guy who goes to bed wearing silk pyjamas doesn’t get up in the morning to do road work’.”

Arum concluded his point by saying, “Tyson, really, I don’t think wants to get up in the morning and do road work and go through the experience of having to train when economically he doesn’t have to do it any more.”

Fury’s last three professional bouts were held in Saudi Arabia. His most recent fight in the United Kingdom was in 2022, where he defeated fellow Briton Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

His professional record stands at 34 wins, one draw, and two losses. Both of these defeats were against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk, who ended Fury’s 15-year undefeated professional streak in their initial encounter last May and subsequently won the rematch in December.

Despite Fury’s retirement announcement, potential rivals have continued to issue call-outs, and fans have speculated about a possible return following social media appearances of him training in his private gym.

Promoter Eddie Hearn recently suggested that a highly anticipated domestic fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua could still materialize, should Fury personally initiate contact with his British rival.
