NAIROBI, KENYA — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a formal complaint, alleging ongoing attempts to assassinate him and endanger his family.

In a written statement addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Tuesday, Gachagua asserted that he has been the target of numerous life-threatening attempts since his departure from office in October 2024.

He directly accused Inspector General Kanja of deliberately withdrawing his security detail, characterizing it as “in a clear thought-out scheme and backward conspiracy to make me vulnerable to an organized criminal gang in collaboration with the police.” Gachagua further alleged that attempts have been made to attack his residences in Nairobi, Nyeri, and other locations by individuals known to the Inspector General, “or where you are a culpable accomplice.”

“NIS operatives trail and stalk me and my immediate family members in unmarked cars or clandestine number plates. This is an affront to right to privacy,” the statement read.

Consequently, he demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the individuals involved, as well as the immediate reinstatement of security at all public events he attends.

The former Deputy President also informed Inspector General Kanja of his need for private security and cautioned against any disruption of peaceful gatherings.

Gachagua further requested expedited protection for his homes and instructed Inspector General Kanja to cease the surveillance of him and his family members by NIS officers.
