JKIA activates emergency response after aircraft crash landing

NAIROBI, Kenya — Emergency response teams were deployed to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday following an aircraft crash landing that prompted an immediate response from aviation authorities and rescue agencies.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed the incident and said emergency protocols were activated to manage the situation and safeguard passengers, crew members and airport operations.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, KAA said it was coordinating closely with relevant agencies as emergency teams worked to secure the scene and assess the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s landing.

“KAA is currently responding to an emergency situation at JKIA. Emergency response teams and agencies have been activated and are managing the situation in accordance with established emergency procedures,” the authority said.

The airport operator added that additional information would be released once preliminary assessments and investigations were completed.

The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed that its emergency responders had been dispatched to support rescue and recovery efforts at the airport.

Other agencies involved in the operation included Port Health Services and EMS Kenya ambulance teams, which were mobilised as part of the coordinated emergency response.

Preliminary reports indicated that no casualties had been recorded at the time of publication, although authorities had not yet released full details regarding the aircraft involved, the number of passengers on board, or the cause of the crash landing.

Witnesses at the airport reported seeing emergency personnel moving swiftly to secure the affected aircraft and ensure the safety of those on board as investigations commenced.

The incident comes amid heightened attention to aviation safety following several recent occurrences at Kenyan airports.

In May, an aircraft made an emergency landing at Wilson Airport, while in March a passenger plane arriving from Kisumu veered off the runway at the same airport. All passengers and crew members escaped unharmed in both incidents, although operations were temporarily disrupted.

Following those events, KAA reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards across airports under its management.

“KAA remains committed to the highest standards of safety at all our airports,” the authority said.

Investigations into Thursday’s crash landing are expected to determine the cause of the incident and whether any operational or technical factors contributed to the emergency.
