KAMPALA, Uganda — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) staged a large-scale drone light show over Kampala on Monday night, using synchronized aerial formations (drones) to highlight Uganda’s development narrative and President Yoweri Museveni’s long-running leadership ahead of his swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday.
The night sky over the capital was transformed into a moving canvas of light as hundreds of drones formed national symbols, colours, and scripted messages associated with the ruling party’s political messaging.
The display drew widespread public attention, with footage rapidly circulating across social media platforms and generating mixed reactions from both supporters and critics.
At Vivid Voice News office rooftop in Kampala, the spectacle began with coordinated fireworks before drones took formation in the night sky.
Staff and attendees were seen filming the performance as the city skyline became the backdrop for the choreographed aerial display.
The event forms part of broader national celebrations ahead of Museveni’s expected swearing-in at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where he is set to begin another presidential term following Uganda’s most recent electoral cycle.
Political analysts note that the use of drone technology reflects a growing global trend in state and political communication, where governments increasingly adopt high-tech visual displays to project modernity, national pride and institutional strength.
Unlike traditional fireworks, drone shows rely on pre-programmed flight coordination systems that allow illuminated aircraft to form dynamic shapes, animations and messages in the sky — a technique now widely used in national day celebrations, sporting events and major political ceremonies across the world.
For the NRM, the spectacle appeared designed to reinforce themes of development, stability and technological progress, while energising supporters ahead of the inauguration.

Security was visibly reinforced across key routes, government installations and public spaces throughout the evening as final preparations intensified ahead of Tuesday’s national event, which is expected to draw significant domestic and international attention.
